so within the next year or two id like to get a box (ideally)! or trailer... (but that would mean changing my car and i love my car!!!!)

so anyhow. i passed after 97 - so would have to do a trailer test right? With a box, (im on about one capable of carrying 1 horse 15.2ish) would i have to do another test?

and maintenance - how much per year does a box cost to maintain?

i know both have pros and cons - hence why im saving now :D if i could buy a cheap 4x4 and trailer just for weekends that might turn out cheaper??

just that i will be paying someone to go out once of twice a month and id love to be able to just take off and go where i want :)

thankss :)

To carry one horse a 3.5t horsebox would be sufficient and for that you don't need to pass an additional test.

thanks :)

do you have any idea what ths insurance /tax/ and MOT would be like on this (approximate!) im 22 btw :)

im on ebay at the moment and its sickening that they are in budget but i would get KILLED if i bought one right now lol!!!!

upppp

looked at insurance - was better than i thuought lol.

but for MOT/Tax.... i have no idea how much this is and generall runing costs?? :)

I *think* it has a normal MOT, so around £50? As to the tax I really, really haven't got a clue... then again, I wouldn't know how much my car's MOT/tax/service/insurance costs - I just never remember for longer than 3 days :o
I know my tax as I just paid it yesterday - £235 for a 4x4 and £35 for the other, that knowledge will be gone out of my head by Friday no doubt.

Tax should be the same as a car tax - pre the emissions banding prices - so £200 ish, I think from looking at the direct.gov website.

I'm not sure about MOT on 3.5t - my lorry's 7.5t, so it has to go to the VOSA test centre for testing. I *think* that 3.5t can go through at certain garage test centres, I don't think they have to go to the VOSA test centre.

Maintenance per year - depends entirely on the lorry, what needs doing, if you can find a friendly mechanic :D !! I'm very lucky as my dad used to be a mechanic, and about 90% of the work on my lorry he does himself, which saves a fortune - only parts to buy. I have been very lucky with my lorry in the last 5 years I've had it, as its not had any major issues (frantically touching wood right now).

:)

How frequently do you intend to use this bit of kit? i know it possibly sounds like insanity but have you considered renting one whenever you use it?

If you want to rent a 3.5t, it would cost you around £100 a go. Seems like a lot but if you use it once a month, that's £1200 a year. Not so bad when you think that insurance is likely to be around £400, MOT £40, Servicing £100, tax £200, breakdown cover, breakages, storage etc etc etc. Not to mention the depreciation and "cost" of mileage!

And, if it breaks, you can just hand it back!! some of the 3.5t horseboxes you'll be seeing on ebay that are within your price bracket, will likely be conversions poorly constructed on dodgy underlying chassis. (not trying to say that you are a pauper, only looking at the £2k ones but I know how easy it is to get carried away with these things!!) It would DEFINITELY be a false economy to get a box on the basis of its price as you'll only end up getting stung down the line.

If you have friends with little ponies (or someone to drive the tack in a car behind you) you may well find that you can transport your horse + pony & split the rental cost. :)

It's all very good, but OP is 22, which means that renting one she can drive herself is nearly impossible.

thanks all

id also look into buying a cheaper 4x4 and trailer... as i think that could work???

yeah i have only checked one so far and its £600 a year including breakdown.....
