I'm loaning a mare this year to put in foal. Ideally I'd like to buy a mare of my own to breed from in the future. Where did you guys buy your mares from? In a perfect world I'd like a warmblood type mare with at least 3 generation known pedigree. I'm not in a position to buy right now and don't want one before my foal arrives next year but would be nice to have some idea of where to look. Thanks in advance everyone.

You need to decide on the type of warmblood you want and the job you ultimately want the foal to do. I don't think theres any particular magic to finding a good mare - most studs wont sell their good mares for obvious reasons, so most likely will be a private sale.

i put some wanted ads out and about, i actually had a huge response, as you can imagine, i had a lot that were nothing like what i had stated i was looking for, 16hh plus, with a pedigree etc i had some random unpapered 12hh ponies offered! I also had some people that were asking far too much for their mares, mainly as they thought it was what i was after, i also had a lot of mares with injuries (some due to pants conformation), that the owners just assumed would be good to breed from as they were ,mares,
BUT...
i did get offered a fab mare or two, one of which i ended up with! ok, shes 15.3 and 2 years older than i was looking for but shes a proven broodmare, i got the chance to see her most recent foal, and i managed to negociate a fab price!
I'd really say just throw some wanted ads up, early into the season or ideally before and see what is offered.

good luck

So I'm guessing it all comes down to money or luck in the end? lol. I would like to breed dressage foals as I don't have the nerve for jumping. As for type I'd like to breed something of medium weight, nothing too heavy or too fine either. Sorry if I sound picky.

I was looking for a really decent broodmare 2 years ago, and had a decent budget. I looked at various websites in Germany, like the Trakehner verband and pferdesuche but ended up buying in the UK. Was even thinking of going to one of the Verden auctions
So if there is a particular breed you are after, eg Hanoverian or Trakehner, try contacting some studs - you never know what you might get offered. Sometimes good mares get sold for reasons beyond the owners control. Sometimes they have very well bred fillies that they end up selling

I got one nice mare on loan from a private owner, I bought one from a dealer, one from a small stud, and the rest I got from Bluewood Trakehners (www.trakehners.co.uk) - I like dealing with Sian, I like the same types that she does, and she's lovely, can always find a nice mare for you as well because she knows so many peopl - the sort that tends to stay in touch with everyone.

Whatever you decide be sure to get her examined internally first, some people sell mares as broodmares with a history of having produced foals struggled to get them in foal for various reasons then advertise them as for sale. Just been through this myself with a mare purchased last year and who then chose to loan the mare. She may have been a fantasic broodmare in the past 10% but has a 10% chance of conceiving now due to her uterine condition. Poor sould was told nothing and passed on as someone elses problem.

At this time of the year you might want to consider something that is already in foal too.
