Ok so unfortunately the foal I would absolutely love is sold but the dam (herself a sucessful int. eventer) is back in foal again, to the same stallion. This foal, if it's healthy etc etc would carry the lines of our deceased broodmare, coupled with those of my sister's all time favourite eventer who she produced off the track to 3*

Seeing as we no longer can breed foals and I know my sister was desperate for another one, is it really stupid to offer to buy next years foal?

Not at all, you have the land and experience so why not?
I would however wait until it pops out first, but maybe register your interest now !

We have often sold foals "in-utero", as do many studs. We tend to ask for a deposit that is returnable should anything happen to the foal either before or after foaling.

Its very common practice, especially if you have seen a combination of bloodlines you would love to have.

I would say "Go for it"............

i would definately phone them and tell them your interest !! as Anastasia said you can pay a deposit which is retunable if anything happens !!

You'll regret it if you dont !!

yea very true but i think i would still do it !! you cant miss an oppertunity ! !

sounds good - it is a bit more of a gamble buying in utero but at least nobody else can snap it up - and you might get a better price too.

Very bad idea buy the foal you've no idea what it will turn out like buy the foal. Another mouth to buy the foal feed, another set of buy the foal vets bills...

lmao @ Druid. Couldn't agree more. Boss - you get the lines you want and as already said, it's not uncommon to buy in utero, yes it's a risk but one well worth taking I would have thought.

Sorry im going to give a differant answer to everyone else .
If it was me i would ask for first refusal on the foal when it was born but wouldnt definately buy it until i saw it what if you dont like it.
I know most foals are beautiful but it could be really ugly or have something wrong with it that was minor but just enough to put you off.

I understand what sallyf is saying. However, we have sold several foals "in-utero". None have been ugly I hasten to add..........LOL

. But if there was anything wrong with any of our foals then they would not be sold, regardless if someone has booked it early.

PLUS if someone did put a deposit down on a foal and REALLY did not want it, then I would not sell it...........think much more of my breeding stock than that. I would then give the client the option of another foal (if there is). HOWEVER, if they decided that they just dont want a foal now then the deposit would be retained, as it is with any of the sales.

For instance one of the foals we sold "in-utero" was because this particular client had seen one we bred in England. He was bay, 4 socks and a blaze. She seen him and wanted the same. So she booked the foal regardless of sex (as sometimes in-utero sales can be only if it is a colt also).

Anyway.............what did she get....................bright chesnut filly with two socks and a blaze..........

...............yes it was not "quite what she was expecting".....but nonetheless, she purchased her and absolutely adores the ground she walks on.............
