I am thinking of buying a foal or youngster to let grow and bring on myself for the future.

Does anyone have any recommendations for stallions to look for, what kind of price I should be aiming for, for something decent but not cost the earth, (budget of about 5k, room for more if found something) and any websites to have a look at in the general area, I am based in the North West, willing to travel a bit.

We bought our last from cvs stud as a yearling and did very well with him including 5 winter champs and 1 summer national.
They now have a lovely dressage stallion with a great temperament which I feel is very important

Another one saying brightwells, sale is soon and we got a cracker there last year! Lots to choose from and unbelievably cheap for some.

I have a stunning 4yr old that I bought from them as a yearling. Temperament and movement to die for for under 5k. He beat Woodlander Supertramp at RFOH at Stoneleigh in 2010. Woodlander Supertramp was a 'Gamblethorpe' baby who was originally sold by them for 7.5k (well at least that is what he was advertised for on their website) so really good value for money!

Grafenstolsz foals could be worth looking at (I know someone who has a lovely one for sale if you want to pm me)

I would advise going to the brightwells sale for research if you like, but DON'T buy there!

Generally the horses are over-produced to get the maximum sale price, and the hype of the show can push prices up.

I hate the way youngsters are often rushed to be produced for Sales, and have seen too many youngsters break aged 5/6/7 having been pushed too much too soon...

How about visiting some studs? They sometimes have sales at the end of the summer/autumn too, when they need to clear out youngsters before the winter, so you can get a reduced price.... that's what i did, got a beautiful 2 yr old at £2k less than asking price.

I truly believe if you do your research you can get an amazing young horse for £3-£5k...

What sort of size do you want? I have a foal for sale that ticks your boxes. He looks like he will make upwards of 14.2

By a dressage pony stallion - Bernwode Brokat, out of a mare by Irco Lhee, she goes back to the likes of Furioso, Samber etc

I would never buy a Grafenstoltz as a dressage prospect!
I would suggest going along to one of the futurity evaluations would give you a good starting point as the foals are assessed on their potential for whatever discipline they are entered for.
Several of these will be for sale .Not only are they graded but the judges also give their reasons for the grading in public for everybody to hear.

As somebody else mentioned I would resist the sales unless you can see through the production.

I have to ditto Burge, I have a gamblethorpe youngster, they are left to grow and mature naturally, proper sane horses, I cant fault mine. Or burges, hes a complete dude ;)
Worth a visit and a ring, if nothing else :)

Always make sure that you can compare a number of foals to get a perspective on the best. You need to buy for your discipline with breeding that goes with that discipline otherwise it is a big risk to invest £5000 in a foal for dressage that is by a jumping stallion. You may have a brilliant eye but foals can also fool you. Check out the dam line even more than the stallion as that will help you know what the chances are for success. £5000 is enough for a good foal but that should then look like a £12000 - £15000 3 year old.

PM me for more advice
