Hi, I don't post very much, but I am about to buy my first horse.

I have just rung up about a horse and am hopefully going to view it on Monday, he sounds ideal, 10 yo, 16h ISH, snaffle, good to handle, box, clip, shoe, hacks alone or in a group - has done sponsored rides and dressage (competed up to novice).

Now, I have one question he is grey, how do you keep them looking smart and mud/stain free?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

i have a leopard sptted and he never looks filthy really however i have really good grazing, little mud. he is rugged and when he gets filthy i just leave him to dry and brush it off the next day x

I have a grey horse - and to be honest, 95% looks immaculate most of the time.

His head, and sometimes his neck (as tonight) look an odd colour during the winter.

But once the mud dries, and is brushed off he looks fine.

i never have any problems keeping my grey clean, and he is a real mud monster!

however, he is fully clipped and iron grey so has black legs...slightly cheating. =]

washing up liquid works wonders on a grey tail, just don't put too much on, otherwise you'll never get the bubbles out!

i don't think you should let the colour put you off. greys when they are clean are the most beautiful colour imo.

minimal brushing required, wash tail every week to keep it white, and a good wash before a party!! they are easier than you think! and if stabled a nice big bed!

Thank you, I guess its just a fear I have, of him looking a bit grubby all the time even after you brush the mud off.

I have a thing for dark bays, but if he is a good as he sounds when I try him then the colour won't be important

Today I had to be rush as I had a lesson and just 30 minutes to get ready for it (stupid traffic). For starters , he was 15 minutes walk down the field there/ back and I had to leave 5 minutes before my lesson time to get up there. 10 minutes to groom, get myself ready and tack up...

No different to any horse really as far as mud goes, it just shows up better

Apart from his head/ top of his neck he's usually very white

I'm going to disagree sorry

my grey mud monster is the dirtest animal ever, if there a an inch of mud he can smother his whole body in it.

He detests being groomed and in the winter he gets sprayed with 7 day mud away which helps a little

On the plus side greys do look amazing when all tarted up and we do get loads of comments on lovely he looks

i wouldnt let colour put you off if the horse is perfect for you if vinnie had been purple and lime green stripes i still would of bought him i couldnt care less about his colour x

My grey horse hates being brushed too. I use a cactus cloth, which he is much better with.

It's my bay who hates being brushed, and she loves the mud

My grey enjoys getting grotty, but scrubs up surprisingly easily

I swore I would never have a grey but mine ticked every other more important box (height, age, experience etc). He is an unclipped mud magnet and to be honest a good brush soon puts him right.

If i am honest it depends on the sort of land you have, we are on clay and it is evil stuff and dyes my gorgeous grey girl a lovely orange colour it obviously does it to the other horses too you just cant notice it! No amount of brushing and scrubbing can remove the orange glow the only way to remove it seems to be either hot clothing or a bath!
However when she is clean she looks fantastic and you really feel you actually acheive something by bathing a grey as you can see the difference!

greys arent that bad tbh with the rubbish weather we have been having my boy hasnt really had much time out without a rug off to be truthful unless its been the odd occasional hot day he loves rolling in everythin cow poo and mud but it doesnt bother me he is the best horse i could ever have in a million years

dont let the colour put you off, BUT I am with the "my horse loves to get filthy" brigade. I am forever washing his tail/bits off and now have an extensive range of thermatex neck covers./rugs./leg wraps to compensate for all the washing he gets. On the plus side - he looks amazing when fully scrubbed up as he is a rose gray...

Another one who loves the mud...

He hates being brushed but actually cleans up very well & is good with the hosepipe when he's beyond brushing.

Don't be put off greys but make sure you leave plenty of 'cleaning time' when you're going anywhere. Also Cowboy Magic Green Spot Remover is fab for tough stains. Good luck.

I wouldn't be without my 'new' grey (although he is steel grey) he loves mud but doesn't like the brushing so much but I just tell him if he hadn't rolled he wouldn't be brushed so vigorously that seems to work for all of 2 mins. My old boy is pure white and I just don't know how I coped during my pony club days, luckily now he can get as dirty as he likes as retired and lives out.

Don't be put off by the colour, when I was searching for a horse my ultimate colour was grey hence buying the one and only grey I saw

Full neck rugs are good. I think though the results speak for themselves when they are all scrubbed up and look fabulous.

I nearly didn't buy our grey pony because of his colour, but I am so glad I did. Missing him would have been one of the greatest mistakes of my life...

thank you for your thoughts and advice. I'm loving the photos, I think rugging and bathing will be the order of the day (any excuse for new rugs!)

I guess as many of you have said, if he is the right one the colour is irrelevant!
