Buying a horse(again!)

So...sister is home from uni, wants a horse for the summer.

So parents have decided to buy her one since borrowing always turned out bad for us. So, rang up today
9yr old 16.1/2 bay gelding, hunted, xc, sj everything. (no mention of flatwork) 1500....Whyy? because it is not 100% sound in the wind. So I'm dubious, as not sure if it will be able to do everything. Apparently it had an operation as a youngster.
Would you consider it? It's to hack and pootle at 80cm.
 
Sounds like a whole lot of trouble. Even if it suits you, will you only keep it for the summer? You've got to consider how easy it will be to move on again....
 
hacking and 80cm should pose no problems if it has done all its said it has. if it has had op as baby then it will have done all of these things with this problem.

insurance wont cover you though, so get it vetted, perhpas talk to the sellers vet?
 
Ditto resale..... It would be better to spend a bit more knowing you will get it back if its to be sold at the end of the summer, than to be stuck with something unsound that will be hard to shift.

Is a loan a real no go for you???
 
Loan is pretty much no go unless we find an ideal horse. If it is suitable it would stay as mum's hack but I completely agree, I think it is a liability.
 
Did it have a hobday or tieback or both, do you know? If it is not sound in wind, I'm guessing it was unsuccessful? If it was then don't touch it with a barge pole, but if the only thing wrong with it is that it has had the surgery, it wouldn't put me off too much. Loads of racehorses have this done and competition horses also - it might be worth a cautious look. Besides, some people are more honest than others - if a horse has had a hobday and tieback, it could pass a vetting with these undetected if they were successful. They might just be looking for a good home for the horse, so are willing to take less money because they want the buyer to know the history.
