I found a beautiful mare for sale that would be perfect for me. The owner was keen for me to have her and allowed me to ride her for twice a week over a month to ensure we would be a good pairing. I had the horse vetted. Unfortunately she failed the flexion test on right hind and was also lame on the lunge (4/10) (same leg).
I had never noticed the lameness until that day although one of my trusted friend said the horse felt stiff for a few steps in trot when she rode her (horse was fine in trot up though).
The owner was shocked by the vetting outcome and said she had never been lame in the 5 years she has had her. The horse had been staying at another yard whilst the owner was away and it could possibly have injured itself in the field galloping around.
It was agreed a back person would give the horse a once over the next day. The back person found tight and sore muscles on the right side of her back suggesting she had slipped with legs out behind her. Anyway, the horse has been treated and I am now getting it re-vetted.
I am obviously now a little worried the owner will bute the horse up for the vetting and maybe cover up any signs of lameness. I don't want another field ornament (as have one already). Am i being over cautious? or Am I mad getting the horse re-vetted or should I walk away now?
If the horse passes the 5 stage vetting then I will gets its bloods checked for bute but this is over £250! On top of the vetting fee! Ouch
