Not planning on buying a horse just yet, but was just having my daily browse of HorseMart. Have noticed that there are a LOT of horses for sale by trade at the minute. Now I have always been told not to buy from a trader. What are peoples views on this. Cos I have seen a few nice horses that if I was buying I would be interested in but seem to be put off because they are at a traders.

Opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks guys

Don't forget if you buy from a trader and the horse is not as advertised you have a comeback under the Sale Of Goods Act which you don't have with a private seller.

Do your research and check the seller out carefully, avoid anyone that feels like their trying to 'push' a horse onto you. Dealers often overprice horses too as they need to make a profit so check the price out carefully also.

I wouldn't recommend a dealer if its your 1st horse but if you know exactly what your looking for and take someone knowledgeable (and preferably brutally honest too) you should be fine. Always make sure you have someone with you as a 'witness' to what the seller is saying about the horse, although that goes for private sellers too.

I have brought most of my horses from traders due to the sales of goods act as got stung big time by a private seller. My friend is a very very good trader and i have had my past 3 horses of her, she is based in worcs www.whitfordhorses.co.uk my last boy i brought from her has taken me from a nervous wreck to doing a mini xcountry last week!

You need to check out if it is a good trader or a dodgy one. You can get fantastic horses from the good ones and, as someone said above, you do have some comeback when you buy from a Trader.

Cool you must be from my local area before i moved! bromsgrove? sarah is very experienced and practical and i have never known her sell a bad horse, she matches them very carefully and shes not scared to lose a sale by telling a purchaser that the combination is not right together, highly recommended!
