Buying a horse - what do you try/check

After the failed vetting, I am going to see a horse tomorrow. Sounds what I am looking for, and I will obviously ride on the road and in the field. Catch, groom, tack up etc. I will be using the horse for hacking - what else do I need to do, and how long do you usually try for?

Obviously I would get the horse vetted if I wanted to buy but how many times do you try out, and visit? Hard work arranging anything in the easter holidays...
