Buying a horse with a sand crack-would you???

A friend would like to view a horse at weekend-I will be going with her. She is very taken by horse already but im a bit more sceptical!! I want to make sure she gets right horse and this one ticks all the boxes temperament wise but dealer has been upfront and told her horse has sand crack in rear hoof! dealer says it is quite large but both her vet and farrier have seen and reckon its been there for least 4 years and wont cause a prob-i have asked for some pics to be e-mailed so i could show to my own farrier. has any body had experiences of sand cracks and would this put you off buying. Horse is heavyweight cob and will be vetted
 
Hmm, personally No I would not. It would be sods law that the crack would start to be problematic the minute your friend bought it! Surely a good farrier should have sorted the problem by now? Sometimes a ' brace' is put below the crack to help stablise it. Are you sure it is a sand crack and not something called a 'False quarter'? Now they CAN be a big problem!

Go along with your friend to have a look as untill you have seen it for yourself you can't really pass judgement.
 
I bought a TB with sand cracks, very bad in left fore.

After about 5-6months of farriers formular, keven bacon and a good farrier his feet started to look nice. Had about an inch of new hoof growing. 9-12 months later you would never have known he had sand cracks.
 
I have to say when I was looking for a horse for my daughter last year we turned our back on one with exactly the same problem. Owner assured us it had not caused any problems but I had a brief discussion with my vet who simply reminded me of that expression "no foot no horse". It may well have been absolutely fine but I simply could not risk my hard earned savings on a horse which my daughter would quickly get attached to and which might then prove useless. Too risky there are lots of nice horses out there.
