I am looking at an oldish Leyland 130 Turbo to replace my IW Trailor ( looking to stay away more at shows)and just wondered its capability carrying two large horses, hills etc

I have only ever driven Ford Cargo's and found the smaller engine lacked power.

Sorry just to add the container is wooden....

Hi. I've got a 2000 chassis Leyland DAf 130
It has partioning for three horses, enough living to stay overnight and a comfy bed area.
Lorry cruises easily around 50-60 mark and returns approx 25mpg.
Although the box is quite light I think the engine has loads of power and torque and should be enough for most needs.

Of all the lorries I have owned my Daf 45/130 was the best! Plenty of power, better turning circle than a lot of cars, parts easily available and an easy engine to work on. I had to sell mine because I'm in the LEZ.... when I can afford a brand new lorry it will be a Daf again!

probbly the best buy on a budget just make sure its not rotten , the unladen weight is ok and the cab can tilt..
they drive well but the cab is a little spartan by modern standards, heater fans sieze up and back brakes can give trouble for the mot but otherwise good

I just brought a 145 Turbo and that is very speedy! I have even overtaken a few lorries on the motorway! My friend has a 130 and he is very happy with it.

With regards to weight you should get the seller to take it to a weighbridge so you know what you have to play with. Mine was 5.4 tons so have 2 tons left for horses, stuff, me, petrol etc.

We had another box weighed and thought it would be considerably (sp) less (as was much smaller and the struts were on the outside so it wasnt double lined) and it weighed the same, so dont second guess how much they weigh as it doesnt work that way.

My truck is very easy to drive though

perfect11s.........cheers has 12 months test on it so i would hope brakes are ok.

i assume that you can replace any of the wooden slats if required?

[/ QUOTE ] yes you could replace the wood but it may
be quite involved depending on what is behind them

check all around the cab, and around the windscreen carefully. If you tilt the cab and check all underneath where the seats are for rust - if they are going to rust this is the most likely place for it.

My dear DAF has had some poorly holes that had to be sorted out this year, so keep an eye for that

Agree about the heaters as well - my heater went U/S this summer, and our stock delivery driver used to have a DAF for work, and he said that his DAF had to have the heater replaced quite a bit.

ETA - also don't assume that because it has gone through test that it will be ok. I have had my lorry pass test one year, and then be failed on something that was exactly the same the year before. Have it checked over by someone you trust before buying
