Well, i'm jumping very far into the future here but thought i would ask and see what the replies are like.

Well i'm looking for a horse at the moment and i would just like to do some local shows.
But after i've done my school exams etc i would like to go out and compete a little further at different venues.

I have a very non horsey family, but they're supportive and have bought about the idea of a horse box if i do get a horse and eventually want compete elsewhere or just to train at different places.

So basically, when buying a horsebox do you have to go through any tests to be able to drive one?
And could you recomend a 1horse horsebox (for a horse about 15-16.2hh - seeing as i am looking for a horse in that size range) that are typically less expensive but good quality?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if i've been a bit numpty about the whole idea :D

I'm going to assume that you haven't either got your driving licence or didn't pass your test before 1996 since you mentioned school exams.

Short answer probably yes you will have to do a test but it depends on the size of the lorry.

Long answer, if you want to drive a lorry up to 3.5t then you will be able to do this on your normal car licence.

If you want to drive a lorry up to 7.5t then you will need to get you C1 licence after passing your driving test. This includes a theory and a practical test which you can sit when you are 18.

If you want to drive something over 7.5t then you will need to get your C licence which you can get when you are 21. It also includes a theory and practical test.

If you are getting a lorry and you are 21 or over then you can do straight to get your C licence.

Hope this helps

3.5t box anyone can drive on a normal licence (provided they can get insurance!) -- There are many on the market, newer and older and the price and quality varies wildly!

7.5t box anyone can drive provided they passed their licence prior to 1997, so most likely your parents would be ok to drive you around in this. Again ... loads of models on the market!

If you have somewhere to park a box and go out regularly, I find them an attractive option!
