finally hubby has agreed we can get a new lorry - dont ask what i had to do!! - but im finding it a bit like buying a horse - as you learn more the scarier it gets! we bought my first lorry 5 years ago because it was just down the road and the woman made the fatal mistake of saying she was emigrating in 2 weeks, so it became cheap too! i didnt even know what bhp was. its been a great lorry for us but now we are travelling further to shows, lots of motorway driving and i would like a bit more power and a bit more living. i have NO IDEA what anything is worth - what your prepared to pay for it i guess - and a vague idea i should have an iveco tector, but i think ill end up buying something because it has nice roman blinds! and those little blue lights!!

It depends on your budget and how many horses you want to carry is a biggy as that probably will dictate how much living you can have because of the weight. Havent got a clue mechanically wise but been there looking for wagons and although exciting at first, soon turns into a scary experience as you are spending mega money on somrthing you hope is reliable etc.
Ive just sold an Iveco Tector, pulled like a train but my first mechanic hated them, he loved Dafs. I never had a problem with it but Im told they are renown for brakes ceasing if you dont use them enough.
As for price, Ive been looking as I regret selling mine and they vary loads. My main priority was the horse area, some are horrendous, maybe new but flimsy with awful partitions. I only had day living but it meant my unladen weight was low so my wagon could legally carry 3 which was its selling point and it sold in 2 days.
I had mine converted by a professional company and it did cost but it was safe and as I wanted. Would I do it again.... hmmm no, not unless I had about another £10k on top to buy a coach built box. Im now keeping my eyes open for an older wagon, hopefully cheaper thats always been a horse box. Think Im dreaming :D

first thing is set a budget, then how many horses, all the modern 7.5 tons will be plenty powerfull enough, remember newer than sept 2001 they all have limiters set at 56mph or less... make a list of must haves and window shop on ebay, H&H horsedeals etc to get a idea what your budget will buy .... happy hunting .....

thank you so much - when i got my old lorry i had 2 rangey 16.2 wb but now its all about my daughter! so i only need space for 2 ponies really or my sj and one of hers if we can combine a show. budget would be about £35K.absolute max! i need to ask my mechanic what he would prefer to work on - anything other than my old piece of s*** as he calls it!

Nooooooooooooo, I wanted to be the first lol
Footballerswife, Ive never seen one in the flesh but the Kevin Parker wagons look amazing on his website and for your budget you could buy one new. I can also highly reccomend the build quality of David Murray horseboxes, Ive seen a few different builders wagons including some at mega money and I honestly havent seen any built like his. Not sure what price he starts at though.
Good luck in your search

I gave up trying to buy one ready built and got one built to my spec. I deliberately just got the living basically fitted and I wanted to drive it for a couple of months until I decided what I wanted in it in addition. I'm notoriously fussy and like to build up a lot of knowledge on whats available before I commit to a decision but I must say I am totally satisfied with what I have ended up with! I started looking in November last year and ended up buying my own chassis because I wanted an automatic. I then got it coach built exactly to my spec and I think I've saved quite a few thousand doing it this way, although this was not the object.

If you only have to take two horses max it sounds like you could get one with really quite a large living so you might want to decide what are your essentials in your living. Also think about things like how many tack lockers and feed lockers you need, what sort of ramp, how many electrics you can get fitted - things like lit electric steps make a huge difference when you are actually using the thing! I quite like the Prestige ones I must say.
