Buying a new horse.. Passport q!

Hi guys,

I've got my foal arriving next week, he's being micro chipped today but won't be passported in time.

He says he'll bring all the paperwork so I can fill in the ownership details and then send it off and they'll contact him for payment then send me the passport.

Is it okay to do it this way? I just wanted to check with the whole not selling a horse without a passport malarky and I've not been in this situation before!

Is the foal weaned? Have its markings been recorded by a vet while still on the mare? If this has not been done it will probably be necessary to carry out DNA tests if you are planning to passport your foal's breeding details - sorry you have not said what type of foal it is so I am guessing!

For your own protection I would check with the society with which you intend to register the foal and make sure that you have all the paperwork you need. The incentive is so much greater on the vendor to provide everything prior to receiving his money than afterwards!

He's in the process of being weaned.

Not as far as I'm aware, no - I can check though.

He's a Welsh x Oldenburg, he'll be registered with the Welsh Cob & Pony Society.

Hmmm.. Thank you! I will ring and check, I'm not really comfortable doing it the way he's suggested. It's his responsibility not mine!

Your right it's his responsibility to passport. Not 100% sure as mine are passported jabbed, chipped and registered by 3 months but I think they legally have to be passported and chipped by weaning or 6 months old, whichever is sooner.
I wouldn't take possession or pay up until paper work in order.

No, it's not alright to do it this way UNLESS you know very well and trust the seller completely and he's just along the road so you can pester him.
By rights, all breeders should register their own stock it is not up to you to do it and the society will not contact him for the payment as they won't process the application unless it is paid for up front so don't trust that one!
I would seriously tell him he has to have applied for the passport before you take this foal home otherwise I'd walk away. It won't matter that you travel without it as long as it has been applied for and it's easy enough to ring the society to check that they've received it even if they haven't processed it but remember it's no use taking his word for it; ring them to check and remember to give enough time after his posting it else it might still be in the post Hopefully, he will have put you down as the new owner on the application so it should go straight to you rather than to him to send on to you.
