i.e. purchasing a horse/pony specifically because it has already qualified for HOYS/PUK/Hickstead etc, enabling you/your child to take the ride. Or, similarly, getting a professional to qualify your horse for you, so that you can take the reins back for the championship.

Any thoughts?

Just wanted to add - I'm asking purely out of curiosity - I haven't just gone out and bought a ride for the Derby!!!

I don't see the problem with doing it... It's certainly not something I would do though as it's so much more satisfying to go there when you've qualified yourself...

Lots of people do it early in the season so that they can sell the horses before the end of the season.

Not something I would do, as I would get no satisfaction from sitting on something that someone else has done all the work with.

But that said, who's going to turn down the chance to ride at HOYs?

I wouldn't personally buy a horse simply because it comes with a ticket to compete, however, if it was the right horse I'd look upon it as a bonus. I know sellers will qualify the horse so they can sell at a better price. I'd never go out looking for a horse that had already qualified but as I said if the right horse had qualified then great!

Look at it the other way - if you make your living buying and selling horses, you will (hopefully) get a lot of money for something that's qualified for a big name event, because whether its ethical or not, people want to do it.

If i had the ability, I'm sure I'd do it, because while it would be awesome to ride at HOYS, it would be even more awesome to have a bank balance in the black and to be able to feed all the others through the winter just from the sale of one horse !

I wouldn't - there are countless cases of people who have bought the ride, only to do badly at said event and never to qualify again! Each to their own I suppose, but I'd rather earn it.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it, if there is something wrong with that then you could be picky about all sorts of things in competing horses in various disciplines surely?

People breed/produce show horses for the ringside market, its how they make there living in some cases, so there is no shame in seeking a horse to take you there to the top, if that is where you want to be.... without all the time, work and expense and or course your wanting a long and successful showing career with that particular horse and you are open about it all, and pay tribute to those who have produced your horse to such high level, every one is winner then.

I personally would not do it but that's just personal preference like others have stated, even if I had the money to do it.

But I would not begrudge anyone that did, I wish them well....however what would get my back up a bit is people who start with nothing, know nothing, buy themselves success and say they have done it all, lie about everything and think their experts and look down on you...those are the ones that peeve people of I think and there's a lot of them about loll!

I don't see a problem with it but for me personally I wouldn't get any joy out of it.

I like my achievements to be my own. I would get no satisfaction out of showing/riding someone's else's hard work.

If you can afford it and you want to be able to say you have competed and join in a big event without all the work, then perfect.

We are all different and all want something different from our lives and our horses.

I was chatting to a girl at a show once, she paid a lot of money for her horse, he was a hack I think. Anyway she told me that if she had bought him with the rides at HOYS and RIHS he would have been about twice the price.
