I have a budget of 2k to get myself a towing vehicle. Any recommendations? It won't be used day to day as I jave a small car for commuting so can be as rough and ready as you like, I just need it to be able to tow two 17.2hh.

We bought our Isuzu Trooper for £1500 four/five years ago :D It's been super, towed nearly every weekend and has been until recently our only car, so has done a fair bit. Never, ever been stuck in a boggy showground either ;)

J&C

Thanks, leaning towards an Isuzu at the moment, hoping to come and visit you and the boys soon :D

I have decided to give Axle another month off, maybe two............just started riding him again and he just doesn't feel 100% ( can't explain what but I know him so well and he needs more time ) - but baby is ready to back!!!

Definitly go for a Long Wheel Base.........my pajero was brilliant but lacked space with two horses 'stuff'.

i have an n reg vauxhall monterey , rebadged isuzu with fsh and 62000 on the clock bought for £2000 and love it. i too have a small car, mini as my main car and just tow with it. i think it tows 3.5 ton.

I had the same issue and had decided on a Trooper after doing some research.

(Fortunately Daddy bought me an Xtrail instead (for much more money) AND the trailer to go with it.....!!!)

But - I'd go for a LWB Trooper for a 2k budget.

Good post wellsat - my predicament exactly!

Have an old landy now which has been used to death by my Dad and I and it is struggling (bless ol' Greenie) to tow one 15.3 chap up a hillock.

I test drove a Mitsi Shogun two weeks ago and found it was like driving a marshmallow! Sooooo soft... but I suppose I'm used to fairly hard ride. Didn't go for it....

Let me know what you go for? Tempted to look for a Trooper myself now...

I recommend a Pajero, high build spec than a shogun, Jeep or Izuzu.
Cheaper to repair than the Jeep or Izuzu too.
More motor for your money on the Pajero also.

Don't get a SWB, stick with the LWB and I would recommended the petrol models. Make sure it has a heavy duty towbar, many of the standards aren't man enough for horse trailer and it's contents ;)

I have had Pajero's and Shoguns, love em. I'm also adding a Shogun Pinin to my collection next week as will mainly be towing my 420kg chap on his own and the Pajero is a bit juicy! esp with the fuel prices, would rather used the Pinin for day to day travel.

Ex had a couple of Trooper's in his 4x4 collection but found them to go wrong easier than the Mitsi's. Also like Fourtrak's

A Pajero is an imported Shogun..with similar spec..but the InS will be more expensive because its an import.

Similar spec, but Pajero is higher. For example, the Pajero has a split air-con system for front and rear, shogun never did. The general build is better on the Pajero.

As for the insurance being more because it's an import, that totally depends on who you use. Adrian Flux are no difference for the equiv. import.
