i`m just off to buy a water trough today to install in the field which will make life easier and save time.

i can buy a galvanised 0ne that i will have to buy the inside workings separate and costs a bit more
or
a black plastic one which comes already assembled.

i like the look of the black one but was just wondering what other people think of them(eg. are they prone to being chewed at all?)

all my others are metal, what would you do?

I find the plastic ones go green quicker than the galv troughs. I'm guessing the black colour means the water warms quicker and encourages the algae to grow.

there is between 9 and 13 horses so they drink a lot and the water would be constantley (sp)changing, would this still happen?

Don't know as have never had that many drinking out of them!!!!!

In relation to your chew question, the plastic ones haven't been chewed (even the one that's in with the broods and youngstock).

I was told very bluntly last week that my metal trough is 'unsafe', and that it 'could break a horse's leg' and that I must 'go and buy a plastic one ASAP'

I have had my metal trough for years, and have not had a problem! Plastic could be just as 'lethal' when full; any hard object making contact with a horse at speed has the ability to injure.....

Go get a metal one, Cahill!

the plastic ones are far safer imho. i've had the big black rectangular ones for about 7 years now, no chewing, no problems.
MissElz, metal is always going to be more dangerous than plastic around horses, unless it is very well-rounded and smoothed off everywhere.

weel i`ve bought a black plastic 40 gallon one with all fittings, just have to wait for my non-returnable valve to arrive then we can fix it in.
thank you everyone.
