So, seeing as my horse hunt is not going well, I am trying a different approach and going to look at a 14-month old on Sunday!

Having not purchased a youngster before, what do I need to look out for? He is currently entire, so if he is suitable, then that's first on the list!

I have had experience of youngsters, having helped my sister with her foal and also at the riding stables where we had some broodmares and a couple of bogofs - so not coming at it cold, as it were.

Advice gratefully received.

Check bith dingly danglys are both there if he's a colt! I would gelding him a aprt of your offer. I'd want info on his worming and trimming schedule to date and a 2 stage vetting to check heart, eyes and overall development

Yearlings can look all out of proportion, so If possible ask for photos from when he was a foal. It can give you a better idea of what you might get later on. I agree with themule above, definitely get a 2 stage vetting done. Also check out the dam if possible, why was she retired to stud, whats her competition record like, her temperament etc etc. id be interest to see how he approaches you, is he nervous / bold and if hes been handled does he pick his feet up ok. (ask them to pick his feet up)
