Always wanted a youngster to bring on, possibly break and ultimately sell on.

A friend of mine has a stunning 2 year old appaloosa that she is selling as new horse is coming and she needs the room. Seen him a few times and seems a nice sought, obviously will go have a proper viewing and the likes before buying.

My plan would be just to handle him, work on leading, picking feet up, all that sort of thing. Ive worked with youngsters all my life so i am exsprienced (worked on studs and dealing yards since i was 16), but still really nervous about having my own!

So what do you do with your youngsters? As its my first youngster i'm selling on (had 3 and 4 years olds in the past, brought them on and sold them on) would i be best off selling ready to be broken or break myself?, obviously when hes old enough to be broken...

Any advice much appreciated!!

hi i think unless youve got ur own land ,keeping youngsters always works out more than you will ever make on them so the only reason to get a youngster is purely for the pleasure of having it -dont forget if you are on livery 3 or 4 years waiting for it to grow is a lot of money to have to recoup before you make any profit! and its much harder to part with something youve had since a foal .

This ^^^^

Buying and selling a 4 year old "might" make you a few ££££ but to be honest it isnt worth it with a 2 year old at the moment, esp when feed/hay/livery prices are what they are. I have 2 youngsters (bought to keep not to sell
) and they have already both cost more than their purchase prices in upkeep..!!!

I have a 2yr old (3 in march) tb. I brought her as a project, i try to keep her as cheaply as possible (i know thats near impossible ;) ) shes out 24/7 hayed twice a day, one feed a day.
At the mintue i just play about with her, bring in the yard, pop in stable, groom, pick up feet. Walk her round menage etc i may back her myself havent decided on that one yet been a few years since i ve done that! :) i only piad 200 for her so already her upkeep has outweighed that :D
