Long story short, saw the horse of our dreams last Saturday and immediately put a deposit on him to secure. My business is in the process of being sold and I expected the money to be with me and the contracts signed tomorrow, so I said to the dealer that we would have the horse collected this Saturday.
After a lengthy meeting with the purchaser of the business/solicitor/accountants (what fun...) it turns out this week is totally out of the question and that it's more likely it will be done next week, maybe even the week after.
I've just rung the dealer and offered to pay for said horses' keep until we collect him, saying it will hopefully be next week but at worst the week after, or to pay more towards the deposit. She said not to worry, a week won't be an issue.
So now I'm panicking that she'll sell the horse if I don't pick him up next week, I don't know what to do and am really confused...
I feel awful for messing the dealer about and I apologised profusely, although it is out of my hands. I have said that we will go down to the yard on Saturday to see him, and also to pay more money towards him.
How long do people normally leave it before collecting/having the horse delivered? Is it the norm to pay the horses livery while it is still at the dealers yard?
Please help put my mind at rest..!!

Don't worry. If you've paid the deposit, and are offering to pay livery costs, then they really ought not to sell it.

Could you get a bridging loan from the bank or a relative in the meantime. Keep in touch with the dealer and be as honest as possible. Hopefully there won't be a problem. Its a buyers market, so everyone wants to hold onto a buyer!

I didn't pay a deposit on mine. I said I wanted her, subject to vet. Organised the vetting for about 1 1/2 weeks away, then after the vetting we discussed the price (there were a couple of things brought up that neither of us were aware of) and then I paid in full in cash and took her home straight away. I wouldn't have expected to pay livery while I was waiting for vets and lorry hire to be sorted.
If you have been totally upfront with the dealer then it sounds like it isn't a prob. Perhaps it is worth getting a contingency plan in place incase your business sale takes longer to come though? Do you have something in writing re you paying the deposit and the horse being then reserved for you until the balance is paid? Does it mention any time scale? I would just continue as you have been and be totally up front with the dealer so she doesn't think you have done a bunk and make sure you have something in writing too.
Good luck, exciting times!

I have just bought a horse (not from a dealer) and it has taken 3 weeks to get him from the trial to the stables. Due to arranging the vet and transportation. Owners didnt mind at all & I only left a deposit as well :)

Thankyou Honey, everything seems to be stressing me out at the moment! I wasn't sure whether to pay more of a deposit at the risk of losing it if they find someone else who wants to buy him, but a deposit is a deposit whatever it is to begin with surely?

get a written contract, so you know where you both stand.

being a dealer i think it will be better to pay the livery costs or she might just sell to someone else.
If it was a private home you could be more satisfied thet woukd wait for you.
