Another exracer post sorry...

Im looking into possibly getting an exracer as my next horse. Ive no idea about TB prices so thought you HHO'ers would be able to help me. How much would a sensible (not nutty) exracer cost, that is sensible in traffic and sensible all round really? (Im not expecting horse to have done a lot comp wise).

Thanks

Do you want one straight from trainer/sales or one thats been schooled some what. I bought my boy from Ascot for just under 1000 but he was sold 3 months earlier for over 3 grand at the sales. I spent a lot of money on him with a pro rider so if a add it up I could of bought one for approx triple his price at the standard he was when I put him on loan and that was not great :)

Hi Penfold.

There have been loads of posts on here recently regarding this. It all depends on the horse. I have two. One cost £300 and the other £1200. There is a huge difference in the type. The cheap one had had tendon injuries in the past, but because I knew him and didn't want to show him, it didn't bother me. That was seven years ago and he has never been lame except for when he fractured his leg. More recently I bought one for £1200. She is a straight mover, clean limbed, well bred, wonderful temperament. However she had done nothing and had never seen traffic. I bought her anyway on the advice of the girls at the racing yard who had looked after her and they were right. Because of her temperament, she is taking everything in her stride, has hacked out alone and in company, and competes quietly.
Some people on here will say that they will pay nothing for ex-racers, but I also had an involvement with one we were given a couple of years ago and to be honest, wish I had had nothing to do with it. It was on the verge of dangerous and was never completely sound. You get what you pay for. If you buy direct from the trainer, speak to the lads and lasses who look after it. They will give you an honest opinion. If you buy from the sales, you will get a cheap one, but there are often reasons they are at the sales and haven't been sold directly from the trainer. PM me if you want more details

Look at post today by Vix Tucker to see what can be achieved with a £450 exracer, if you're lucky and got the balls and dedication to persevere. She has worked wonders with India but a lesser person would have given up in the early days but shows it can be done

You get what you pay for a lot of the time!
Also, entirely depends- once a horse has been in training its technically and ex-racer... Therefore, Elizabeth Power's horse that she did Burghley on last year is still an ex-racer, just a very well-trained, expensive one!
But around about £1000-£3000 for one thats been taught the basics of normal life, isn't a psychopath and can function on a fairly good basis...
