you need to go on forum that deals with rehoming ex race horses, make sure you are very well informed, it will be unlikely you will get a decent one with a brain at a sale, I would always get direct from a trainer or rehomer that way you know what you are getting to some degree and you will get some history.
You will also find the reason polo yards get rid of horses is not because they grow too big, but rather just are not cut out for the work. Depending on what you want to do, it might require weeding through a lot of crap.
I probs wouldnt buy from sales, although you may find something nice at Ascot. Best to ask around local trainer's yards to see what they have going cheap.
Try here (North Farm Stud) or speak to Grace she is top lady & really helpful. She also has some lone horse which for a certain amount of money is yours for life but should you cercumstances change & are not able to keep it she will take it back. http://www.northfarmstud.com/rehoming.php
Hi,
Sales are good if you have time and can appreciate something that needs to mature. You need to appreciate that at the bottom end of the market (ie £1500 at Ascot) the horse is there for a reason. A lot of them have problems, not always visible to the eye. Most of these problems are easily fixed with a bit of time, and sometimes the time is all a lot of them need. We buy a lot from Ascot for racing and have had a lot of success, but we give them 6 months roughed off as standard before doing anything with them. If you go there it is very much buyer beware, anything can be put through sold as stands. I know of one at the last sale that went through with a cracked pedal bone - buted up of course.
As for polo ponies, wouldnt touch them with a bargepole. They buy them out of racing, I get a lot of calls, they dont mind nutters and dodgy legs to start with. Id hate to see one after it had been hammered on a polo pitch for a couple of years. Also, theyre top buying price is £1000. I had someone come to try a horse who said the last one shed seen was a 12yo ex racer/ ex polo - the asking price was £3000.
Where abouts in the south west are you? You may not be too far from me. I have heard a rumour that a nice mare is going through Leominster sales next week, but I dont have a catalogue yet.If you want to tell me more about what you want to do with the horse I may be able to help.
