We are looking to buy some well bred youngsters with a view to keeping them and breeding from them. When buying horses from the continent to breed from we have had them xrayed prior to purchase but as the horses we are currently looking at are much younger (yearlings) I was wondering if people thought that this might be overkill?

When I bought my colt as a 2yo last year, the insurance company required a full 5-stage vetting and 22 x-rays of his feet, joints, legs etc., etc.

I would have had the 5-stage vetting done anyway, but at the time I thought the x-rays were a nuisance. On the other hand, it is nice to be absolutely sure there is nothing wrong, even at such a young age.

I suppose it sort of depends on the value of the horses you are buying. If they are very expensive, it would probably be worth going to this extra trouble and expense.
