i am just in the process of buying a horse from a dealer who is lovely

But my question is what should be done with the horse as in should i make sure that he comes full vac and shod? anything else i should make sure on before i get the horse ???

If its being vetted it should have its feet in good condition, so normally you would shoe before avetting is done. Vac. are normally up to you, as not many dealers bother to vac every new horse tht arrives, this is because with so many its very easy to forget to get the second done and then its a wasteof money.
 
Well if he isn't fully vacc already, then he won't be, it takes around 7 months to complete the course.

Shoeing wise, you could ask for it to be shod if his feet are really bad, otherwise just take it as it comes. Are you having the horse vetted?
 
personally id not worry about vac and shoeing until you get the ned home.

deff get a 5 stage vetting with bloods. and see the horse in most situations before you pay for it!

things like hacking alone, in the school. .even ask to see it loaded if necassery.
 
i have had the 5 stage vetting and all was grand the only thing they told me was about sweet itch but i knew about that already. i am taking him out tomorrow hacking which i am very excited about but was not sure whether to ask her about the other stuff. i know he has had the 5 day worming course.
 
to be honest., id take it all with a pinch of salt and do every thing from scrath when you get the horse home..

put it this way and it is in no way ment as a "pick a hole in a dealer" but financially it isnt viable to worm/jab every horse that passes through.

look at your new ned as a blank canvas, start every thing from scratch.. teeth worming.. and if theres no records jabs aswell
 
Never had a horse from a dealer whose vacs are up to date or even done(tho do understand why)
Would ask for feet to get done before vetting as horse can fail vetting all for sake of shoes so in dealers interest to do this.
When we got daughters pony vetted our vet said if feet had been a wee bit worse wouldn't have carried on with vetting as no point.
 
vetting done by your vet or theirs?

I would still worm it when it gets to its new home. Any decent yard would insist on this as a rule anyway.

deals with vetting and also buying from dealers. I deal in horses myself and the guide is written from personal experience of buying from some of the best and unfortunately from some of the worst. I do agree with comments above and would not overly worry about vacs and worming until you get the horse home, what is really important is that you are buying a horse that suits your needs and that it is sound, so vetting vital.

irishmarkets where are you based ive just moved from southern ireland?
vetting was done by a vet i sent in they did not know them before hand. the vet was lovely.
i would be the sort that trusts everyone which hubby is constantly going mad about. lol
