Just a general musing really, I have my companion pony advertised as due to her needing to be restricted during the summer have decided she would be better off in a home with another pony that has similar dietary needs or where she is used abit more.
Been umming and arring whether to replace her or see how my two cope, although means one is left while the other is out, I worry more about my mare who I compete than my gelding as he doesn't like to exert too much energy so won't run around too much but my mare will
So just wondering whether to source a youngster to use as a companion
It would be quite a specific (ish) one, I have trawled ads and not much has taken my eye :o Wouldn't really want to spend too much though ;)
Ideally i'm looking for a dun (gelding preferred) to make 14.2- 16hh (don't want anything too big) Just wondering if anyone had any tips / advise
I have found a few for sale in ireland but not sure if worth the cost of transportation etc
thanks :)

What do you mean "not worth the cost of transportation"? The cost is the cost (usually about £200 - £240 from Ireland, one way). Dun horses, especially those over 14hh, can carry a premium so could sell for a bit more than the average. Prices are at an all-time low over here at the moment, but good horses are still selling so it really depends on what you want to buy - Broken/Not broken? Yearling - 3 year olds? Registered? Anything presented for sale at an auction will be vetted beforehand, with the option of a further vetting if you want. There are all sorts at any auction, so you'd really have to either come over to take a look or engage a very good agent.

Sorry thought i'd put age, looking for anything from 6 months (so weaned) to about 2yrs old. Sorry worded the transportation abit wrong, i've never bought a horse before (my mum has always had a say) so although I can tell obvious problems with conformation etc i'm not an expert. Also sorting transport etc is alittle of an unknown area.
This is all a musing really as I might decide on not buying anything else for awhile so just put the feelers out so to speak. :)

Is it specifically a dun that you are after or would you be happy with a buckskin or palomino etc., because that would open up a lot more breed mixes. The transportation from Ireland will not generally be as much a transportation from the other side of England, because so many are transported from there to here that finding a shared load is generally pretty easy - particularly if you buy at the sales.

You could try studs if you are after a youngster as often they will have more stock than are advertised - maybe something like this? http://www.wildenfarm.co.uk/horses/for sale.html

Dun / buckskin , not really wanting a palamino although they are gorgeous couldn't be dealing with a white tail and mane :o
Of the ones on Wilden farm, Wilden Cowboy Classic is the only one to catch my eye, although they are describing him as champagne colour :)
