Buying from Ireland - suggestions?m

I’m planning to start looking for a second horse in July. I’ve been keeping an eye on Horsequest etc and Facebook ads for months, but not seen much that has caught my eye, so wondering whether a trip to Ireland would be a good idea for more variety. Or, am I just not looking in the correct places here?

Has anyone done this, and can recommend some dealers that I could either contact nearer the time, or ones who advertise on their own pages please?

I’d be looking for:-
  • 5-7yo preferably
  • Gelding
  • Either a very nice moving traditional cob, or a chunkier ISH type (I’m 5ft9)
  • If a gypsy cob, minimum full up 15.1hh plus and equally wide. If ISH I’d imagine more around the 16hh/16.1hh mark.
  • Something forward but not ridiculous - i’d describe myself as a competent amateur who’s competed to BD AM.
  • I want something with a big personality.
  • Ideally coloured or odd coloured.
Any suggestions welcome

Charlotte at Cill Dara is great and has some lovely horses coming through, but they would be a bit more sport horse type and definitely not cobby. And while I think they are worth the money, you need fairly deep pockets.

Callum at High Meadows farm has lovely cobs and is well worth keeping an eye one for the type you are after.

If you want quality unspoilt unbacked cobs (which you maybe don't!?) then K&K Cobs has some lovely ones.

Thank you. I’d forgotten about High Meadows Farm. Will keep an eye out.

Yes, I really want backed but will have a look at K&K in case.
 
I bought unseen from Adam Ferris who is in Ireland. My horse is absolutely fabulous. A ShetlandBitMeOnce got an unbacked 3yo from him about a year ago which she is also pleased with.

He has a FB page and also a HQ 'yard' page if you fancy a look :)
 
If going to Ireland, I’d say Gormley Horse Direct (GHD horses) would be worth a look and they have a lot of ISH and allrounders in. They also own the Stallion who my lovely coloured boy was by who I sadly lost a couple of years ago.

Reid Finlay sells nice cobs but they are usually vary green.

I ended up using an agent, and they’ve been absolutely great. From me searching adverts daily for around 6 months, they found me one in about 24 hours 😂

Which agent?

I tried one and they sent loads of photos and videos that looked great. When I caught the plane and arrived, the reality wasn't as I had hoped. It would be nice to know of a good one for when I do it again!

I used one over here about 15 years ago, due to circumstances I was not able to travel around Ireland and try for myself. Luckily I realised what game she was playing before losing money and landing myself with an unsuitable horses. To say she was a disaster and a full on rip of merchant was putting it mildly. I know of at least one forum member from the UK, who is not active on here these days, who was also sent a very dodgy horse and lost a lot of money through this particular bint. 😟

She talked the talk but definitely did not walk the walk. I am sure there are very good ones out there, but yet again, I do wish people would do their homework.

At least I only lost the plane fare and hotel fee.

The one I finally bought, unseen, is amazing! That was a reputable dealer though, not through an agent.
