Buying horse - frustrated rant ( Sorry)

I finally made a decision to sell my lovely hunter/all rounder, but immediately he'd gone I realised I really missed having a horse, so been looking for a new one for around a month now. I scour Horse and Hound and Horsequest on a daily basis... and I have seen a few that seem to fit the bill, but how on earth do you manage to get to see them?
I work the usual 9-5 Mon-Fri and of course lots of the people selling horses are off competing / hunting etc at weekends. I seem to be juggling arranging viewings 100miles apart late on Sat evenings or 1st thing Sunday mornings... only to discover later that the horse has been sold to someone who made it there during the week!

It's a hard thing buying horses!!!
As mum works full time we're limited to weekends too but the thing that gets us - the number of people that don't answer phones or you leave messages and they don't ring back - you would think they would want to sell their horse!!!
We had a terrible timewaster the other weekend, horse advertised thursday night, got through on friday morning arranged to see sunday as "at a wedding on saturday". Mum phone sat morning to check we will be first to see - yes yes everything fine, we'll be first to see, anyway get a text 2 hours later saying she was sold and the people saw her before mum had phoned to check she was for sale on the sat morning!!!

I had the same problem when I was horse shopping- I travelled over 2 hours to sussex one day only to be told that the horse i wanted to look at was already sold that morning, even though I had done the same thing and called to ask it was still ok to come view! I then got fobbed off with a 14.3hh cob - and I was not pleased as I was too big for him and he was very very steady, a real kick and go - which is lovely for a lot of people but they knew that wasn't what i was looking for.
You will get there eventually! I travelled from Hertfordshire to Derbyshire to see Whisper and apparently someone had seen him before me but had been put off by the owner's lack of facilites - anyway I tried him out, went on 2 hour hack, jumped over her home made jumps and fell in love and actually ended up with a horse that everyone likes and will turn his hoof to anything. Best thing to do is try make appointments early in the morning at the weekend so someone doesn't get in there before you. Best of luck!!! xx
 
There are way too many timewastwers out there!! Youd think theyd make an effort if they wanted to sell the horse!
Its hard doing it in the week because of work but also I would be a bit declined to go in the evenings because if you think its bed time for the horse hes probably not as lively as he was in the morning also he may have already been ridden, your best bet is to try and get a viewing for saturday mornings or something.
Do you go on "www.horsemart.co.uk" soooo many horses on there you can also "refine your search" so you can find exactly what your looking for.

I had the same thing happen to me when I was 13, had NO knowledge of horses AT ALL (nor did Daddio), and to say I was an extreme novice is putting it politely! We were supposed to see a 13.3 palamino mare suitable for my needs. We arrived, the mare was gone, so we bought a 'supposedly 14.1hh' bay gelding at 3.5 years. Definitely the wrong buy, but perservered, and 13 years on, I love my 16 year old '15.3hh' bay lol!!

Beginning of this year, I got itchy feet! Saw an ad in a local tackshop of a breeder selling coloured yearlings. I wasn't one for coloureds, but I did like a colt which should have made 15.2 ish, and had minimal markings, he was mainly dark. There was his brother who was to make 16.1 ish and very light, something I turned my nose up to just simply looking at the ad! I went the next day, saw 7 horses ranging from 9 months old to 2 year olds, and I came away with the one I initially turned my nose up to lol! WOMEN! lmao xxx

Where are you .My yo is selling her boy hes big 17 2 sj affiliated just gone off to be polished up to sell.Hes 8 or 9 they still have mare.Was advertised on h and h.norfolk area

I'm on Wilts Somerset border, which is a good "horsey" area, but as sods law always dictates, the horses I like the looks of are in Norfolk or Cheshire!

And I think anything over 16.2hh is a bit big for me!
Does any know if there has been a post listing all the good horse sales websites? Thanks
 
Book a couple of days off work and come to Ireland for one of the big sales. You'll have a huge number to choose from and prices are well back so you'll get very good value. Plus transporting back to Eng is only around £200.
 
Funny you should say that, I'm from N Ireland, and on a plane back there this evening to se family, but I am totally out of touch with the horse sales there now.
