I went to view lovely youngster last week from a dealer and made an offer which was rejected. She was adamant she would easily get the full asking. Before my offer was made I asked to see passport and was told it was original owner (she was the middle man).

I have just received msg to say she is fed up of timewasters and would I like to make offer ? Passport is lost and have applied for new one??

Any views ? I did post asking for any views on dealer and had replies saying she is pretty reputable but I'm smelling a rat

Bought my youngster (2 year old) with no passport, but she was pretty feral and cheap so I took a punt on her and just chipped and passported her when I got her home.

No passport does make me think they are low end/ a bit dodgy...

I've known a fair few come via dealers without a passport. There's no problem with applying for a new one but if the microchip (if they are chipped) is registered with one of the passporting agencies then they may approach the last owner on record to confirm the horse has been sold. Friends of mine bought a mare without a passport (had no idea it was illegal to sell without one) and applied for a petplan passport without issue. Her microchip registered back to Holland and they were able to use it to track down her breeder and get her history which was fun.

Horses having more than one chip is not unknown. My old vet said her record was 5 chips in one neck.

No not dragon driving. I did post originally post asking for dealers reputation and got positive replies. I think I have made my mind up to walk away. Thanks for input

It's not necessarily game over, but I'd definitely be wanting a vet to check the chip and call the company for previous owners details. I bought Rosie as a 5yo without a passport, well the dealer had one made for her because apparently hers had ended up going back to Ireland on the shipping lorry, but they were trying to get it back. About a month after I got her it turned up and they posted it to me, definitely the right passport as she was a very distinctively marked coloured and there were diagrams, and the chip sticker was there. Managed to get hold of previous owner too and everything was as expected :)

No passport - cheaper price?

I wouldn't necessarily worry about no passport but I wouldn't be paying the dealer price which is generally high for a five year old with no passport or history.

Its not no passport though is it, its a missing passport and a replacement is being found. Its different from a totally unpassported horse.

To be fair, I'm not fussed about passports one way or another, only in that I expect the cost of one knocking off it they dont have one

applied for a new one or a replacement?

presumably it may mean all vaccinations are defunct, just from a ££ point of view.

LW the way I read your post was that the dealer was hunting for the cupboard to find a replacement ;)

If you like the horse and a replacement passport is on its way I think you'd be daft to walk away, especially if it is a fair price. A missing passport and a horse that has never been passported is different. I suggest finding out which it is before you make a decision. I know the dealer you're talking about, I gave you positive feedback.
