I've owned about 15 - 20 horses and only bought one as a result of looking at adverts. Most have been through a family friend who is a dealer and the others were through word of mouth.
Advertised on the open market with my latest one. Though my farrier was keeping an eye out, and mentioned a few to me.
I kept quite quiet on here about the fact I was horse shopping as I didn't want to offend anyone by them offering/suggesting horses to me - I was soooooooooo picky when I was looking!
Mine came to they yard where i was helping out a friend with her horse. He was dumped in the field and abandoned
the ILPH and RSPCA have taken many horses off his old owner now. as several were at deaths door
So i bought mine from kind of work of mouth but it was more seeing him all lonely in the field and being so affectionate at even the slightest bit of attention. He used to follow me round the feel walking backwards until i scratched his bum for him!
I sold my first pony by word of mouth, she only lives two doors up the road from my yard now and we sold her to my mum's friend. The horse I have now I saw an advert for, but the advert disappeared after a week. We were really interested and luckily I had saved the number so we called it, apparently the ad had been taken off as Maiden hadn't got back from her loan home as soon as the owner had thought. She was never re-advertised as we bought her! Mostly it seems to be done through word of mouth.
I have had a few fantastic horses from both! Always thought word and mouth was best but after Sunny Im not so sure. We bought her from a friend (who bred her) and then we have had quite a few problems with her and it has been very awkward, they were actually quite dishonest and had we wanted to sell her i would have felt terrible. whenever e have sold anything we have always been completely honest and everything has worked out brilliantly, I think if your seller is honest either way is good.
My horse at the moment came through a wanted ad. I was looking for a horse for loan and just put a ad on a free website, less than a week her owner left me an email.
I have to say our best horses have come through word of mouth but we were lucky. Other nearly as good horses were acquired through ads.
My current horse who I have had since I was 13 came across from Ireland, my instructor mentioned to a friend of hers (who goes to Ireland quite alot to buy horses), that I was looking for a horse and hey presto I got Honey.
We got 2 via H&H, another from Instructor and another from my school.
I have never bought or loaned a horse from an advertisement, they have all come via word of mouth. Some have come with issues as a kind of 'last chance saloon' exercise, others just looking for a good home. If I had a bigger budget and was competing at a higher level it might be different, but I am very happy with all the horses and ponies I have had the priviledge to work with over the years
Bought Jiggy from the riding school I was at at the time, he had come over from ireland and then we mentioned to yard manager I was keen to buy something and she told me to try him, fell in love with him on the first time I rode him! Alisha was on the open market
