Viewing new horse seems fine in most respects, but the jabs aren't up to date (5 years out of date)

Am I being reasonable asking for the jabs to be updated before purchasing bearing in mind I intend keeping said horse on a big competition yard where being immunised would be quite important I presume?

I would say that it's up to the new owner to vaccinate and you can ask your vet to do it at the end of the vetting. You will have to remember to get the two boosters done at the correct intervals for full protection though.

Good luck with the new horse!

As above. Also check its teeth, if they were lax about getting jabs done, it possibly may not have had its teeth done recently too and if you're wanting insurance, dental care will be one of their requirements.

Thank you :)

Thanks for the advice much appreciated, cleared my mind on that one.

The second jab is 6 weeks after the first so you would be waiting a while? I'd get the first one done before it comes to you then keep the horse in quarantine. Are you having it vetted 5*?

Nope I'm thinking 2* cos horse is very unfit and I doubt it would pass a 5* atm due to fitness level, I accept the risk because I know a bit of it's history.

I had same problem when we bought ours. I asked the vet who was doing the vetting to do his first jab if he passed & then just got my vet to do the follow ups after he came home. I wouldn't expect the seller to do it.

2nd jab is between 21 and 90 days after 1st. I would keep the horse in quarantine if you are worried, although yard may insist on that anyway.

That's a whole new thread tbh cos it's a 13 yr old going on 14, so dubious about insurance, I've researched insurance and from what I've seen after 15 year old there's not much chance apart from liability, I'm considering rejoining the BHS for their gold membership insurance but that doesn't cover health care so weighing up pros and cons atm.

It's your responsibility to have him vaccinated if you want the horse to be. I'd do the vetting, if he 'passes' and you decide to buy, get the vet to do the first vaccination then. Good luck, what's your potential new horse like? :)
