BYRDS

My son is 12yo and early in the summer we bought a super schoolmaster event pony to try and get him interested in riding properly and not just zooming around over jumps at 1,000mph...

The pony has turned out to be a complete star and his flatwork is coming on brilliantly. Tonight they attempted travers pretty well - I'd have been pleased if I'd been riding!

We've only competed at RC level so far which has been great mileage and useful practice but I wondered if anyone had any experience of BD BYRDS? I'd like to know how friendly it's likely to be and what he might be able to take part in with his 14.2hh pony. I realise each area might be different but would be interested in others thoughts.

I've not really done the byrds thing intensely but have done the BYRDS champs & some of the training days. They can be a little snotty, but generally I think its a fantastic organisation & really worth a go, plus BD (in comparison to BSJA & BE) isnt that expensive!

If you have a posh Oakley horsebox and a pony that cost 20k+ then you will fit in well!!!!

On a serious note, some of the BYRDs kids are very snobby, however ive done the BYRDs Nationals, and done some training, and the talent spotting and enjoyed all of it. Some people are nice, some are FAR too important to talk to you!! (if you get what i mean!)

We've really enjoyed BYRDS and that's from a lad in a very female dominated group.

We've been to Ireland, Scotland and the Sheepgate championships, had some cracking weekend clinics and access to some good trainers and discounted rates.

Yes, sometimes you do have to be a bit "thick skinned" and not take things personally, but lots of "clubs" can be like that. I would certainly recommond it.

Think it's a bit more difficult for lads at the upper age limit, being surrounded by much younger girls so now would be the perfect time.
