Is it worth joining either? Think mare would possibly do quite well at coloured classes, but don't want to register her with them if it won't really make a difference (if that makes sense?)
Was also wondering about grading? Could anyone explain it and whether its worth it?
Thanks very much

If you're just wanting to do 'normal' affiliated classes, you don't have to register to enter, but you do have to be registered to qualify, so you can 'try before you buy' as it were.

Most people either join because they want to qualify for their championships, HOYS or RIHS (one society does one, one the other). If you don't want to do HOYS or RIHS classes, and want to affiliate, choose the society that has most shows near you (they do vary around the country). It's also worth considering that each of the societies splits it's height divisions at different heights (one at 14.2hh and one at 15hh), and you are better to be at the top of your height section than the bottom, so if you have a 14-15hh horse this is definately something to think about.

Thanks very much.
Mare is 16.2 so shouldn't be a problem. Have had a good look at both of their websites but just confused myself further! Not sure if she's good enough to aim for HOYS level - was more of a 'I've got a coloured, might try some classes' type thing!

This is something i've been thinking about too, but got equally confused. I have no idea what we're capable of yet as i've only just got him and he's only 4, so will probably give it a shot at local shows first. Mine is about 15.1 tho so will be at the lower end of our height

If you register with CHAPS the horse is a life member. You just have to renew yourself if you wish to show. For her type, there are more classes for CHAPS in my opinion,

Limited experience with BSPA as there doesnt seem to be as many regular shows on....

Have you got G registered? Had a look at CHAPS website and couldn't find anything in Surrey

From what I can gather it's more about type than colour almost? In which case probably would be better off with CHAPS as they do sport horse classes - which is the closest to her type I think!

Yes G is registered, and did well in In hand coloured classes, I registered him with CHAPS because the county shows round us were all CHAPS qualifiers! But by the sounds of things, BSPA do more down south....

And yes is about type, which is nice. They just all have to be coloured, but are judged against their "type" unless it is just a coloured class, then they are judged against what the should be, so huner type would be judged according to hunter spec, Cob to a cob spec, etc etc, and the best of their type, will win the overall coloured class. Confusing, but hope that makes sense! Try and get her to some Potential sports horse classes though....
