Calendula cream for sweet itch/itchy skin?

Has anyone tried calendula cream for sweet itch on their horse? My horse hasn't got it too badly but I am keen to try anything that will keep it at bay - at the moment I am washing his mane and tail 2 x a week with antibacterial shampoo and applying killitch daily (active ingredient is benzyl benzoate). I have found an unopened tube of calendula cream at home and was wondering if that would work too? It claims to help sensitive and roughened skin, and isn't past its sell-by date.

i use hydrocortisone for my pony,i find it works, vets happy with that

Goodness something I've not used in a long long time. Used to use it for cracked nipples when breastfeeding my babies, all now in their 30's. My understanding is it promotes healing. Worth a try. It's made from marigolds. I love the smell.

I'm having good success with diluted Dettol sprayed on. Definitely reducing her rubbing her tail when stabled. Think it was about 3-5%. Advantage: very cheap, the bottle was £3.95 and will last months.

I've only used it once since posting; I'm not going to use it every day as it is only in a small human-sized tube so I will be alternating with other products. I used it after washing with antibacterial shampoo and there is definitely less flaky skin in his tail and he doesn't seem to be so itchy. Will try it again tomorrow and report back!

Thanks for the other tips as well - is there a specific hydrocortisone cream I should use? Will try the dilute dettol too; I suppose it keeps infection away at least.
