I havent been the one paying for Annies vaccs for a few years due to being away but I went to register at the local vets today and got told thier call out was £40 plus the rest on top so thats 40 plus checkup plus vaccs, around £100.

Now after I picked myself up off the floor I asked my mum how much it cost last year and it was about £50 for the lot at a different vets.

Now this vets is only 7 miles away, the old vets was 15 miles away from where she was kept.
the only diff is there is no other vet in this area!

Whats the norm for a call out now? is that fair and Im just behind the times or is it OTT.

My vet charges £33.50 + VAT (total £39.36) for a call out but they are a good 15/16 miles away. I try and combine as much as poss into a visit to make it worth it. In August when they came out to do the mare's annual vacc, I had the foal chipped at the same time. The total bill was £111.07 broken down as follows:

Visit £39.36
Vaccinate annual. £10.00 (just to stick a needle in her neck??!)
Duvaxyn IET Plus £24.05
I x Identichip £37.66

I've got them coming out on Monday for two x first vaccs and 1 x microchip so I expect the bill to be approx £150

A vet will charge you approximately £35 to arrive at your yard & walk to your stable. He will then charge you for the examination on top of that & then any treatment he gives. He'll charge you for everything used, cotton wool, gloves, everything.

When you have vaccinations done it's best to try & share the visit with someone else on the yard if you can, it will reduce your bill by a small amount.

I paid £25 cash on the day a few weeks ago. Vet came out and vaccinated about 6 horses all for different people and splits the call out. If we pay him cash on the spot is usually works out a bit less, if it is billed to you it seems to cost about a tenner more.

We think he just charges what he feels is acceptable, but the girls back at the surgery bill for every pence of mileage!

My vets are really good. They have a sliding scale for call outs.

If you call them for something routine, they'll fit you when they are at other yards in your area, reducing the call out to the minimum of £15. Of course, if there was more than one of you at your yard wanting to see the vet, you'd share that £15 as well.

I think the dearest they charge is £35, but as we're not that far from them, I've never been charged that much.

My call out costs are about £30. I once had to get the vet out on an emergency, on the Sun of a bank holiday. They arrived within 30 mins, and the call out was £120!

I take mine to the surgery whenever possible for the routine things. It doesn't cost me £36.50 + VAT even with high diesel prices to get mine there and back.

Our vet does the same thing - in fact if they come out on wednesday there is no charge at all so my last lot of flu/tet was £24

Average call out for my vets is about £30, more for bank holidays, night time (which it usually is for emergencies isn't it!). For follow up treatment they will try and call when in the area, luckily they do some big studs not too far away, and keep the cost down that way.
