My husband has just been offered a job at Aberdeen airport, so we will be relocating. He's going first and I'll be following with children, cat and horses in about a year's time. We will be looking for property within a 20-30 mile radius of Dyce.

I'd be really grateful for any information on this area. Are there plenty of livery yards around, and what do they charge on average? Is it likely that I'd be able to find a small yard to let? Are there certain areas that are better for hacking than others (I'm a confirmed "happy hacker"!)? What do properties with land cost? Are there any areas to avoid? What are the winters like - is it feasible to turn out all year?

I'm originally from Angus, but have been down south for 25 years now and am looking forward to coming home! Any information would be much appreciated, as I've well and truly lost touch.

Found this on the Highland Pony Chat forum:

3/4 bedroom farmhouse, CH, DG. Aga kitchen, sittingroom with wood burner, large bath/shower room, utility, conservatory. Lawned, enclosed garden. Stables and excellent, well fenced grazing, secure grass and concrete dog runs. Off road access onto Bennachie Range and on farm hacking with use of the menage.

Very quiet, private location with spectacular views. Gardens maintained and cleaner by arrangement.

Railway 2miles, Airport 20miles, Aberdeen 25miles

Letting periods flexible, from a few days to more long term as required.

there are lots of livery yards in that area, a couple of newish ones i think too! Properties are more expensive the closer to Aberdeen you get, out Inverurie way is also pricey however if you head more out towards Turriff or Peterhead prices drop a lot, but then you are stuck geographically with no rail links and a crap road. There are lots of horsey things on all over though. If you're from Angus originally then tbh you'll know what winters are like up here. Some more severe than others and tbh Id say a lot rides on how exposed your property is. Mine all live out all year and are fine, we are in South Aberdeenshire now but used to live 5 mins from Dyce:cool:

Hi Grumpy Herbert and welcome to Aberdeenshire when you arrive! We really are a friendly lot. Can PM you about yards if you want? I live on a farm about 5miles from the Airport but choose to keep both of mine in livery as much more fun.

Can't give you advice re prices but there are looooooads of livery yards up here! You can guarantee there will be snow, in varying quantities, so it depends how hardy your horse is... I'm planning to winter my new boy out this year so hoping for a mild one, luckily my yard offers year-round turnout :)

Shygirl- your not liveried at Ladyleys are you?your instructors name start with a P?

OP plenty yards to try if looking for livery, prices vary according to area and facilities.
If you go onto the scottish showing forum lots of folk on there from shire.

Oh it does indeed! Big hugs to TequilaMist! :)

Hi Grumpy Herbert! (great name!)

You will love it up here and so will your horse!!

Living out all year is def possible iin the more sheltered properties, it's all about the property's exact position. In the more exposed places the issue is even if you provide shelter, the shelter might be squashed by snow or blown away by gales :-)) Ours is VERY exposed facing directly onto the Cairngorms so we have wonderful views but a LOT of weather of all types!

The other thing to bear in mind is grass sickness, if you have a younger (more at risk) horse esp on sandy soil in this area, then ideally they would be off grass for at least a couple of hours each day, as this lowers the risk. NE Scotland has the highest incidence in the UK - its still rare, but since 90% of cases are fatal it is something to consider.

Dont want to put you off tho, cos what we do have is lots of sunshine, amazing countryside and forests and beaches, and you can ride where you like within reason.

We are in Deeside near Aboyne/Ballater but oop in the hills. Our riding is a bit 3 season most winters due to the sheer depth of snow and ice we get! My two are out 24/7 in summer but the rest of the year they are in at night.

I wouldn't worry about the grass sickness tbh. It is pretty rife up here and plently of yards have more cases than they admit to (liveries). I've been breeding for last 4 years and all mine are 24/7 out. The do have adlib forage though. I'm not aware that bringing them in for a couple of hours is evidential in prevention. Sorry Lachlanmarcus but you are wide of the mark here I think.

You will love it here, it is horse central esp if you dressage or SJ. Plenty for the happy hacker too!.
