Zeus recently returned home from surgery, he's just over 2 weeks into his box rest period. But now his belly is heavily swollen. Vet has taken blood samples to see if its infection, but she says its quite normal and it will probably get worse before it gets better and will probably be swollen untill he's allowed out.

:( is it normal? Did your horses suffer with this unexplained swelling?

My horse had a large fluid like swelling around his incision for quite a long time, is this the kind of thiing you mean? It still comes and goes in warm weather and this is 4 years on. He went staright out in to a very small corall in the field rather than box rest, the movement definitely helped the swelling go down.

One of my mares had surgery for a right dorsal displacement colic a couple of years ago.

I've just checked back on my photos, and there wasn't any swelling on her belly at any stage.

She did have an incisional infection, but that just meant (visually) that the edges of the wound looked a bit puffy and angry and it seeped pus, but even then the belly wasn't swollen.

Hopefully you'll have the blood results quickly, but otherwise could you, or your vet, give the vets who operated a ring and just ask their thoughts over the phone?

Hope everything soon returns to normal.

Sarah

My mare had op 2011 she didnt look any different post op. Could ring the vets who dine the op? Hope everything returns back to normal soon

Mr T had his surgery in May, he had infection at his incision and a lot of swelling. It didn't start to go down until he was allowed to go out.The vets scanned him twice to convince me he was ok :) It got much better when I started walking him out and lunging him. He had to wear a fly rug all summer as the bugs were biting him due to lack of hair:eek: He's just got swelling on the actual incision line now,it feels a bit strange but he's not bothered.

I haven't seen it with the bandage off, but from what I saw tonight its swollen a good 5 inches either side of the incision, and his sheath is at least 10 times its normal size!! Looks like a pair of mangos down there!!!

Has the vet had a feel of it? If it was me i'd like to prod it (not so nice for the horse) but just to find out the consistency of the swelling (hard, soft, lumpy, warm, cold, pitting, does it pop in and out etc...)

Also, does he have any other symptoms such as a high temperature, fast pulse or breathing rate?

sounds like he's not having the most enjoyable time haha! poor lad

I gotta be honest I was not tempted to touch!! but my mum had a prod, said he didnt seem bothered by her doing that!
No other symptions just a bit down in the dumps. He has been in a fairly good mood considering hes been in for 3 weeks.
Expecting blood results today :)

I had a foal come back from colic surgery and She had a great deal of oedema under her belly - it didn't go down until she was allowed to go out to a yard and even then It took a good 3 weeks before it started to go down!

Mine who's had 2 colic surgeries didn't have any swelling, either time. First time without belly band, 2nd time with heavy duty levered corset thing. But - had quite a lot of exercise pretty much straight away both times. Fingers crossed yours is something straightforward.
