This has been playing on my mind for a while, I've asked various people at my yard if my TB can be classed as a roan? Some say yes, some say no.
He has quite a few white hairs over his neck and shoulder area but once you get to his quarters and belly it's just smack bang white hairs everywhere.

He also has some quite odd markings on his legs (Like paint splatters?)

He is like this on both sides of his quarters, more on the left side than the right side.
Sorry for the photo quality, very bad phone camera!

Left side (and close up. Also notice the white splotch at the top of his tail.)

Just quite baffled as I've never seen a Chestnut TB with so many peculiar markings.

I'm no expert either, but my first thought was almost as the first suggestion, I went down the route of 'flea bitten chestnut', so yes, chestnut roan is along the same lines.

If you are on facebook, there is a group called Horse Colour. Lots of colour genetics people there so it might be worth posting a photo and asking on there too. :)
I'm not sure if TB's have the roan gene, but the white at the top of your horse's tail suggests rabicano.
The leg splashes "could" be from the sabino gene.
Rabicano and sabino can both cause roaning, or heavy ticking, although neither are true roan. :)
Hopefully, someone who knows more will be along soon.

I will definitely have a post on there, thanks!
Odd thing is, both of his parents are bay. His damn with one white sock and sire with 2 white socks and a star and snip.

Forgot to mention he also has a full blaze with small "paint splatters" around his eye area.

If you post on Horse Colour on fb, try if you can to post pictures of his face markings too. :)
Usually, as far as I know, socks and other leg markings that look "pointy" and have jagged edges are caused by sabino. Sabino face markings also have a distinctive appearance. A minimal sabino can have very little white at all, but the shape of the markings alone can indicate the presence of the sabino gene to someone who knows it well.
Here's an interesting link - http://www.horse-genetics.com/sabino-horses.html
And another colour genetics link with lots of info on TB colours here - http://www.whitehorseproductions.com/equinecolor.html

Thanks so much for all the info!
I'll definitely give the two links a read. Sabino or Rabicano never even crossed my mind to be honest.

Requested to join Horse Colour on FB too so hopefully I can get some more info on there :)

I would agree, I don't think TBs carry the roan gene and my first thought was Rabicano due to the white at the top of the tail.

Just wondering, how old is he and is he 100% TB ie weatherby's registered.
I have a black TB age 16 and last couple of years we are getting a sprinkle of White hairs throughout coat where there has never been any. No where near as many as your horse though.
As far as I am aware TB are not roan but even a small amount of other blood, further back could show itself I guess.

Wait for Faracat but to me, this is classic Rabicano all over!

And if Faracat says thats wrong then the only other option is a suppressed sabino. One of the two! :)

I'm going for rabicano too due to the white at the top of the tail. :)

Rabicano is thought to be a form of sabino. As mentioned earlier, the true Roan gene is not in the TB population.
