I know how diy livery works (well how our farmer friend runs his diy livery) but I was wondering how grass livery works. Is it just a case of sticking your horse in field and you supply hay etc or do they charge extra if you want it. Also anyone know how much hay is going for at the mo? Thanks (sorry if this is not set out right am doing this on my phone at work! :-o;-))

i pay for a stable and a field on the yard - sole use of both - but i keep her out 24/7 (field is prob 2½ acres if not bigger) i could just pay for the field but i like to know i have a stable if i ever need it so pay for it anyway!

there's 2 rates: £16/week in summer - £21/week in winter. would be £19 in winter without stable - summer raets same for everyone.
hay is included in this price and the farmer chain harrows the field. other than that i managed the field myself ie - restrict grazing with sparky fence in summer etc etc.
IF i kept her in the stable over winter then straw is £5/week - so most livery's pay £26/week over winter
i have use of alarmed tack room, feed room, arena, washing areas etc etc

it is totally DIY though - owner would not know front end of horse from back end lol so liverys help each other out if they can't make it to the field

hope that helps

I have 2 horses. One on DIY livery and one on grass livery at the same yard.

The grass livery costs me £85 per month and this includes the yard putting out hay in the winter. (and they put it out too - i don't have to make the effort ;-)

The DIY livery costs £150 per month including ad lib hay & straw. I know you only asked about grass livery but I'm not sure if my yard is unusual or not in having ab lib hay/straw for DIYer's + grass liveries!

My grass livery does not include hay in the summer but in the winter we pay £1 a day more for hay and it is put out for us.

We can also buy individual hay bales if we want to feed them extra hay in their stables. We all have stables as well as they are useful for storage of rugs etc and it is useful to have somewhere to put him when waiting for farrier etc.

I have about an acre and half to myself, with a shelter for £60 per month - but I have to supply the hay myself (although they can deliver me a roll of hay when required, which I pay £25 for)

Our grass livery is £28 a month but in Winter we get hay put out at an extra cost of £1.50 a day.

The horses are not checked apart from when the farmer comes to do the hay. He also delivers us extra bales of hay for £4 each (little bale)

I recently moved to grass livery to save money and my stable will be built at some point but not as yet.
I buy in my own hay and the land has water on a meter to it and hopefully they will be connecting up mains electricity eventually.
Another grass livery I was at for a while was a field and water from a neighbours garden! They did not mind apparently as they were not on a meter, it was an absolute bargain at £7per week! There was no stable, main reason I left was it was only ever temporary due to an emergency move due to an ignorant YO, it was on the other side of a very very busy A road and I did not fancy risking my neck if and when I could ride so moved back over the other side and down the hill a bit!

Sorry, I digress, I would expect a field and running water on basic grass livery and I would expect to buy in my own hay :)

13 acres two horses £15 a week per horse, hay extra if needed. I section part of the filed off for strip grazing and schooling, suits us but a stable and tack room would be handy at times and perhaps then there would be room for a passenger in my smelly car!!:D
