Am in the process of drawing up final budget spreadsheet for my parents to look at so my dad (who is the non horsy, self-labelled 'wallet' of the new horse and trailer
laugh.gif
) can understand exactly how much cash he has to part with and why...
I have been making a list of revenue (ongoing costs) and capital (initial costs eg buying horse) i hope i have that lingo right
confused.gif
tongue.gif
so for the revenue i have been listing cost of farrier, wormer, dentist, insurance etc. which leads me to my questions.... if people don't mind me asking, how much do you pay for your:
a) Farrier visits
b) Dentist visits
c) Insurance monthly..
Massive apologies if I am being rude by asking, i'm just curious, and would like to make sure i'm not being ripped off

Thanks

I pay £35 for EDT.

Insurance is about £17 a month (but i've valued pony at the lowest I could) which covers vets fees, death, theft, straying, public liability etc.

Farrier - £55 for a set, every six weeks.

Dentist - £45 for a basic rasp from an EDT, plus LOTS of sedative, and paying for the vets' time. Usually comes to over £100 (she really hates the dentist!!)

Insurance - don't have it at present
blush.gif
but been quoted £55 a month from PetPlan.

I haven't had a dentist out yet so not sure.
Farrier I pay £55 or £65 if she needs new shoes.
Insurance I pay £35 a month
Nickie

Farrier: £65 every six weeks
Dentist: £40 every 6 months
Insurance: £400 a year
Wormer:£8-15 depending on time of year roughly every 3 months

What about livery do you need to consider this to (or are you keeping at home?)

Also hay: £7 a week
Bedding- varies but roughly £10 a week

Yearly vaccinations: £45 (including call out), though if horse has not had any you will need to start a course that will cost more (if you want to be legal for many competitions).

Other things like physio, chiropractor~ £40 a time, once a year for general check, more often if a problem.

Saddler: Should check every 6 months to yearly~ £30-40 a time (depends how much horse changes shape and how good you are at checking saddle fit).

Also tack, rugs, grooming kit etc.

Hope this helps, haven't read your other posts so don't really know the full story!

a) Farrier visits - every 4 weeks-£65.00
b) Dentist visits- every 6 months-£40.00
c) Insurance monthly..£50.00
d) livery-£110.00 a week
e) chiropractor- every 3 months-£40.00
f) saddle fitter- every 4 months-£30.00
g) jabs- every 6 months - £35.00
h) wormer 2 times a year @30.00
i) training lesson @ £40.00 a times

£35 for dentist - once a year
£20 for trims - every 12+ weeks
£60 for set of shoes - every 6+ weeks
My insurances range from £17 to £53 per month, per horse. It depends how much the value of the horse is, what you are going to do with it, basically what level of cover you take out. I also have my trailer covered on one of my policies which is why it's quite high.

farrier £55 every 5 weeks (front shoes and trim behind)
EDT £47
Insurance £35/ month for horse, £18/mth for trailer
Horse is covered for vet, death/theft/straying, public liability, tack and me for death or medical cover if injured when riding.
other thing you need to allow for is annual vaccinations which i pay about £68/yr for with a shared visit fee

Farrier visits: £55
Dentist visits: £30
Insurance monthly: £35ish
Wormer: £15-£20 every 3 months
Vaccinations: £30
Shavings: £6.25 a bale... i use two or 3 a week roughly, can cost upto £10 a bale depending on where you live though
Physio: £30
Saddle fitter (every 6 months at least): £50

PaintedLucky, thanks v much that is v helpful- that is really what i wanted to know but didn't want to be seen as rude!

(BTW, if you haven't read my older posts- this isn't my first horse, so am not new to all this- but we are changing scene majorly, from sharing a 15yo ISH at a large livery yard to keeping a more competition-type horse for me somewhere smaller. I'm pretty sure about what i need to think about, but just wanted to compare prices!

) Thanks

Farrier £69/£66 every 6 weeks
Dentist £40 every 9 months
Insurance £300 ish a year (horse insured £3000, vets fees, 2 saddles, tack, Trailer)

Flu/tet jab which is about £50 around me with a call out fee.
Saddler is £40 if there's a alteration. I usually have it checked at least once a year.
I also have the physio check my horse every 4 months £40 for a check, £65 if he's treated.

My livery is £30 /week DIY.

Yep thanks everyone this is useful just to compare to- and by the way, for anyone thinking 'Sh*t does she think her only expenses will be farrier, dentist and insurance!!' don't worry, i don't, i am aware as we have owned horses before
laugh.gif
thanks everyone.
And should say: insurance, i'm talking about an under 15yo, to be used for unaff comps, all round leisure riding, and most likely BE, but only up to Pre Nov so shouldn't have to go into a higher price band. To be insured for vet fees, public liablity, permanent loss of use due to death/straying/theft, and then tack. I'm already insured up to the ears.

The others have provided good info.

Remember that buying a set of rugs is never the end of it, they rip! Replacements have to be found
blush.gif

I'm sat thinking of all the little sundry bits that just add up, so here's a list, in no order whatsoever
smile.gif
:

Feed supplements - everything from Biotin to Milk Thistle, usually £10-£20 per box;
Extra feed - usually needed when one's pockets are feeling at their lightest
wink.gif

Replacement: grooming kit; boots; bandages; brushes; bits of tack; numnahs (need different colours
wink.gif
);
Clipping.
Unscheduled trips to the tack shop

Tis a pricey game owning/loaning horses which is why I share Ellie.

MrsM will you quit this talk of tack shops as I have a habit that needs feeding but not the cash to do it so therefore I can't hear you *puts fingers in ears and sings lalalalalalalala*

What a terrifying thread!
shocked.gif

I have always been too scared to work out the actual costs of horse ownership -I have just accepted that this is my ONLY hobby so I don't need to keep tabs on £s seeping away-
crazy.gif

Sadly flicking through other bloggers costings, they seem to be right
confused.gif

Luckily I love my boy enough to swallow that it takes 90% of my earnings just to keep him
grin.gif

ok
livery stable and field and hay £62 per month diy
teeth £20
farrier £15 trimmed as they dont have shoes had him 6 months had him trimmed twice as far
straw 20 bales £30 last about 4 months
wormer £20
insurance one is £28 the other £25 the cheaper one is a better policy
vacs £35 every 6 months
ours live of air so we have no need to fed them plus they get really hot headed if they do have feed.
to be honest the rugs have cost a small fortune, just cause i like nice cute ones.
it still works out cheaper than paying for riding lessons for my two children, plus they get to ride every day.
once your dad understand that i am sure he will see it makes sence to part with his money and you will be happier and love him more!!!!!!
laugh.gif

Yes, it's normally my mum who takes care of all the horsey finances (they're seperated) but my dad has decided to step in with the new horse, apparantly 'because the last one was so cr*p, i want to see what we're buying this time!!' (we didn't let him see P until we'd bought him)
tongue.gif
blush.gif

I know, i've never actually dared list all the expenses before in the fear that my mum might see and sell up immediately
tongue.gif

And in terms of tack shop binges.. i may have to budget for that too
tongue.gif
my latest tack shop visit- i went for a pair of chaps, came away with chaps, jods, feed supplement i just HAD to have, new leadrope (you can never have too many black leadropes
wink.gif
) the list goes on......
And im actually just remembering, i did almost exactly this same thread about 6 weeks ago
shocked.gif

Farrier - £10 every 3 months (can't recomend barefoot highly enough LOL)

Dentist - £40 p/rasp but bare in mind first rasp can be more expensive.

Insurance - pony not insured, have a savings acount for him instead but my previous pony was insured for vets fees, value £3000, insurance cost £35 p/month

I will list both of mine seperately where I can, but some costs are joint.

Shod one, 17 yr old

Farrier #58 plus #4 for road nails
Dentist #30 every 6 months
Livery #22 per week, on mats with shavings
SHavings bulk bought at #6 per bale, use one bale per 3 weeks.
Lessons #20 per half hour, #30 per hour

Unshod youngster

Farrier #15
Dentist - checks her when he sees my other girl, he doesn't charge for that
Livery #25 per week inclusive of straw - although discounted currently as she has a pen rather than a stable

Both

Insurance #50 per month for both girls plus trailer, plus tack.
Feed - Topspec #34 per sack - lasts about 6 weeks, Alfa A #10ish per sack, lasts 2-3 weeks.
In winter one gets Fibre+ cubes at #10 per sack and the other gets Super Conditioning flakes at about the same cost.
Hay - #20 per bale for enourmous bales, lasts 3-4 weeks fed adlib, my older mare isn't greedy and just eats enough to keep her happy.

a) Farrier visits - every 9 weeks-£50.00 -50p for each road stud
b) Dentist visits- every 6 months-£40.00
c) Insurance monthly..£45.00
d) jabs- every 6 months - £25.00
e) wormer4 times a year @15.00

My sister pays £65 for shoeing every 4 weeks, through hunting season but then has shoes off April, May, June, July, as he gets roughed off.
Dentist £35 once a year
Insurance £450 per year, but thats for everything but not loss of use it would double if she had that. Also we only have him valued at £1500,to keep premium low, cos not matter how low the value of the horse we still get £5000 vets fees.
