Hi there

Going to try my hand at affiliated showing this year. First one at Leeds Castle in less than two weeks *gulps*

Ive entered a Coloured class and Potential Sports/Competition horse. Problem is ive not done any affiliated showing, only local stuff and Im unsure on turnout for both horsey and myself.

I am planning on wearing a shirt, tie, navy trousers and a tweed or waistcoat, blue beagler and gloves.

How do I turn the horse out? Coloureds im thinking in hand bridle - with our without coloured browband?

Potential Comp should I show in a snaffle bridle (he is only 3.5) I have a lovely rolled bridle or again in hand bridle?

These classes are affiliated to BSPA and PUK.

Im off shopping on Sat for any new bits and bobs I need.

I would wear the jacket not the waistcoat. Coloured browband for coloured class, & flat plain in hand bridle / snaffle bridle for competition horse.
 
Yes, the tweed will look smarter.

For both classes he should now be in a 'riding' bridle' as he is technically a 4 yr old.
For the coloured class a pelham with two reins, if you don't want to use a double, is fine. You could use the snaffle but the pelham would look more professional.
For the sportshorse class it's defo snaffle bridles.

Tweed would look smarter than a waistcoat, but if it is warm then lots of people will be wearing just the waistcoats, so up to you on the day.
At 3.5 years old (he looks gorgeous!) - if he is happy in a bridle, then I would probably consider using that rather than an in hand bridle. The leather on these is often very fine and would look lost on this horse. Whichever one you choose, I would be tempted to use something that is reasonable substantial. I would think that the rolled bridle may make his head look large whereas a slightly thicker leather would suit him much more. Difficult to say witnout seeing pics of the rolled bridle.

One of the best things you can do is go onto one of the photographers website, for example HorsePower Photography who did the BSPA show at Keysoe a few weeks ago, and take a look at what other people are wearing in your classes. Find the winner and if you like the look of their turnout, then that is more than likely to be correct!

As far as the coloured browband is concerned, you should turnout according to type. Therefore, if you think he is a riding horse, then you should use a coloured browband, if you think he is hunter type, then you should use a plain browband.

Ohhh Emma I want to come and watch and if you do decide on the fancy browband will have to join you on that shopping trip.

He looked fantatsic on Sunday, you will do great at Leeds!!
 
OOh - are you a Kent person' then? I was doing DR on the Saturday at Leeds but the groud is so hard we've scratched that plan, still may do the ex racehorse and riding horse the next day tho.

Slightly off topic, but I remember David Tatlow being asked the difference betwen a lightweight hunter & a riding horse. His tongue in cheek answer was ' A coloured browband.....!!'
 
Indeed there is one particular horse that qualified for HOYS as both a hunter, AND a riding horse in 2005 ... and was consistently well placed all year in both classes.
 
Thank you everyone for your comments. I have bought a tweed this weekend and am going to search for a coloured browband on friday cross fingers I can find a nice one.

Here is a pic of his inhanf bridle, he actually has a little head so I hope it suits. I will show next time in a pelham I think, he needs time to get used to it I feel.

FMM oh really confused now. Looked at the keyso pics and they all seem to be wearing light coloured trousers? I thought you had to wear the opposite of your horses legs?
 
It is more acceptable to wear the opposite colour to the legs, but with coloureds, it is sometimes not that straightforward (particularly if they are showing a few horses on the same day).
 
Can I just say...what a stunning horse! I was hoping to take my boy for the coloured class but thought affiliated showing may be a bit scarey (for me) at our first ever attempt at showing, but I'm hoping to go and watch so will look out for you. Good luck

Oh yes pop over and say Hi if you see me, Im not looking to do fantastic as its our first real proper show. Just need him to get experience at shows really.
