Help, started side saddle last year with my lovely neddy who took to it very well. We've kept up having lessons and have leased a well fitting saddle but havent done anything since November as have been doing lots of dressage.

Got on him sideways yesterday, in the wind and he wasnt naughty but for me it was like starting from scratch. Felt like I couldnt ride all over again, bouncing about like a sack of spuds and him charging everywhere at 90mph and he's very bouncy!!

It was a bit better today having lunged him first to warm him up properly but still feel really despondent. Have been trying to contact old instructor for a polish up but she has moved jobs.

I just feel like throwing the towel in and a bit sorry for myself I suppose, surely it's not supposed to be this hard?

Try to make sure you are sitting correctly in the saddle. Most problems arise when one of your hips has collapsed and your shoulders are not straight. before you move off, try to get yourself in "snotty" mode! You may find it easier when he is not feeling so bouncy as sidesaddle on a bouncy horse is incredibly depressing. Have you contacted the sidesaddle association for other instructors in your area? I am sure it will all come back to you soon - and it always looks better than it feels!

You will get the hang of it again in no time, like FMM said make sure you are sitting square and not dropping a hip or shoulder.

Thanks FMM for that, the riding a bouncy horse being depressing I mean. Its a pity equitation is judged on ability to ride as opposed to how quirky the horse is, I'd like to see some of the judges sit still on him!!

It sounds like you just need to get fitter to do it again. I rarely get to ride aside these days and when I do my muscles feel like they have been ripped to shreds! Its alot different to riding astride so I wouldnt give up. As soon as you start doing it more it will get easier again.

Maybe you should do some of your dressage comps in the side saddle, I hope to do that if my boy ever matures!

As FMM said speak to the SSA and find a new instructor, that will help you become more positive.

Also where did you hire your saddle from if you dont mind me asking?

It went better much today thanks folks. Im trying to ride or lunge him for 20-30 mins first to loosen us both up, then ride sideways for 10-15. Im trying to keep the sessions short but regular so we dont both get sore.

Trotting both reins was fine, canter right was quite civilised, think Ill leave left canter for a few more days then try again!

Managed to track down my usual instructor so hoping to carry on with her as well.

Leased my saddle from Liz Turner in Cornwall, lovely lady who will travel to fit, u want me to pm u with more details?
