I need a new bit for one of my horses. When I got her in Oct. She was working in a false outline, looking pretty but not actually working. I took her to a fab trainer who gave me tips and encouragement to get her working over her back/long and low and off the forehand etc.

I have done that with success, but she still has the inclination to shorten her neck and when i'm jumping she runs through the bridle and I cant pull her up.

So I want a bit with a bit of breaks, but also one where she will be happy to work into a contact.

Any ideas?

Edit to add, she is in a kk ultra snaffle at the moment.

Have you tried a straight mouthpiece in either rubber or nathe? She might accept the contact and take it down and stretch with it better than the KK. If the action of the KK upsets her she may run through it to get away from it - she may not with a straight mouthpiece - worth a try?

Malibu was like that, loked pretty but false so put a loose ring kk bit in and worked miracles and used the kk universal for sj and xc and again fantastic!

What breed is your mare? just that different breeds can have different mouth conformation as I found out - my ID x TB has a smallish mouth with a thick tongue. this can affect the bit, i was using a kk loose ring but she was unhappy with the joints which pressed onto her tongue. her outline was also false but jumping, she didn't take the contact at all. swapped to a happy mouth with peanut joint and she's much better (need a full chek french link for xc though - for steering/brakes!)

I love the KK bits. Rather than changing the bit have you thought about altering the nose band you use? What about a grackle? This will help with the braking, but not mess with the work you've done on her mouth.
