I was wondering if any of you lovely people would be able to help me?!

I am contemplating a move to East Sussex at some point in the new year, and moving myself, two horses and two cats there from Hampshire. I will in all likelyhood be working in Brighton / Lewes area, but am happy to commute in and live / keep the horses somewhere more rural, up to half an hour drive away. Its really important to me to keep the horses somewhere where they will be happy, and that there is access to good offroad riding, with minimal roadwork, as one of the horses is not reliable in traffic. Does anyone have any suggestions as to areas I could start looking that have great riding? I thought about Ashdown Forest, but that might be a bit too far from Brighton....

Any help would be very much appreciated!

ashdown forest is the best place to find direct hacking offroad and yes it is a bit of a treck. Think there are also some places round sheffield park.....

Hi.
Have a look at the villages of Firle, Jevington, Wilmington and Alciston. All are very near to Lewes and have pretty much direct access onto the south downs which opens up hours of off road riding.
Was ridig up on downs at Firle yesterday and it was awsome!
Hope that helps!

I'm sort of on the West/East Sussex border-Theres Chailey Common, sheffield Park, Ditchling which is about 20 mins from Lewes, maybe 30 mins from Brighton.

Also Firle is a good place to hack out too as someone above mentioned. East Sussex is a very horsey area and cheaper than West Sussex too.

There are also lots of toll rides in the area as well, if you go onto the TROT website that is very helpful too.

Good luck!

I used to live in halls at Brighton university and the riding club for the university is based in Ditchling, pm if you want more information on yards or whatever. Ditchling is really nice and rural, I'd imagine there would be a lot of off-road hacking and theres a lot of yards in the area. Its about a 20 minute drive from Brighton centre and I guess about the same from Lewes. Near there you've got places like Hassocks and Burgess Hill. Even nearer to Brighton theres Ovingdean and Rottingdean, I've got family there and I always see horses in fields etc and on the roads - the roads are quiet and I'm sure there would be off-road hacking there as well.

Thank you so much - thats a great help to have a few places to start from!!! Much appreciated - I will let you know how I get on! (Fingers crossed house sale now ACTUALLY goes through!)

my horses are just north of brighton just on east/west sussex/ brighton border and i live in east sussex. hacking is fab we have very little road work to do and if doing any competeing then acsses to main routes very easy. so dont rule out the brighton area just stay close to downs north ofbrighton. i also think ditchling/plumpton very gd areas although off road hacking maybe more of an issue though.

I keep my horse at the same yard as Hollypass and it's fab

I'm also in the Chailey Common area!
Was on the Ashdown Forest for 3 years and it is fantastic! I think generally Sussex is a good area for horses, with good hacking etc
