Anyone just with unridden youngsters, d'you ever find yourself hankering for a loan to ride? :D Millie's only been with me since Friday and already I'm scouring the loan ads for something to hack. Don't get me wrong, I'm really looking forward to bringing her on and she's already my baby, but I can't help wishing for something to pop out for a quick hack on or pop a jump with every now and then. Am I alone? :D

Not at the present to busy training my two babies, theres so much to do with them. i love seeing them tackle and make sense of new situations. im breaking them next spring and cant wait!
There really is nothing like starting a baby and training it.

yes!! when i first had my youngster i had another horse to ride - when i gave her up i had nothing for 6 months until i backed mine - i was hankering for a ride!!

No you're not alone!

I do have a riding horse but he is currently brewing an abcess and has been for 3 weeks. I also have a retired Cushing's pony, a 17hh rearer who I won't ride since she decked me on the road 2 years ago, and a welsh colt. I WANT TO RIDE!!! But I really can't cope with 5 horses :p

Luckily, my friend has moved up to Wales too, and her horses are arriving on Thursday, so I will get a ride on her lovely Comtois. If I can get on. lol

Sadly no i dont feel like that, you take on a youngster knowing the score, you are a care giver/teacher till the time is right. I know that sounds harsh, but I have seen many people get babies and really they don't have the time to wait for them to grow, which is why it has become popular to back babies, but that's a whole different post.

You're right, that's a whole different post and bears no relation to my OP ;)

Everyone else, glad I'm not alone :D I drive to the yard seeing wonderful countryside that would look so much better with me and a ned in it...I'll be making clip-clop noises while driving next :D

Yes, I bought a weanling and decided I didn't want to be without a ride for 3.5 yrs so I did take on a loan horse to ride. I then bought him but now my youngster is 3 I am doing more with him and so the riding horse is going on loan to a friend :)

I will back my 3 yr old next spring when he's rising 4 but plenty of prep work to be getting on with in the mean time

Lol, I got my guy on loan after someone had loaned him for 3 years after buying a yearling, they wanted something to ride while baby was growing.

He is now looking for a hacking home again, sad you are so far away :D

Ooooh don't tempt me! :D

I have a herd of 6 now, my 2 ridable ones are off on loan and the other is 4 who I will break this summer, hack for a few weeks then turn him away till spring. I know I will want to ride but will be so busy with my other 3 youngsters and uni work it wouldn't be fair to have one that can be ridden, sitting doing nothing. I shall grit my teeth and wait for spring 2013 :)

I've just started sharing an older horse whilst I'm waiting for my youngsters to reach the age to be ridden. I love having them and watching them grow and learn but I also miss riding and I look at it as keeping myself fit ready for backing them, after all it wouldn't be fair to get on them if I am unfit and unbalanced after not riding for a few years :D

Yup I get gripped by that urge sometimes..:rolleyes:got a rising 3 yo, daughter's 11.2h (no amount of pony squishing is gonna work there) and an in-the-process-of-being-backed 7yo...
I've curbed it by riding friends' horses here and there to keep my hand in as it were...but I am finding that now I'm fully engaged with groundwork for 2 of them plus taking my daughter out L/R, its kind of absorbing!!
But yes, do find it hard not to be regularly riding...so, I just beg/borrow/pay to ride something so I'll still remember what to do once I finally get one of mine board-able!! ;)

So glad I'm not alone :D It's not like I'm sat twiddling my thumbs or anything...lots and lots to do with Millie and I do have a toddler...just miss being able to hop on something that's been there and got the noseband :D

i know exactly where your coming from. Ive 2 x 3year olds, 1 x yearling, mare with foal at foot and my daughters horse.

While she rides, i find myself shoveling poo. I then have to change the litter trays of the cats, and pick up the dog poop from the garden. I sit back and wonder what the hell am i doing ?? just glad the kids are way to old for nappies.

Daughter does let me on her horse now and then, so do get an occasional fix.
But i wont get to ride until next year, when my first baby will be rising 4, its been a long time coming, and i am hoping it will be worth the wait.

It will go quickly, so dont worry try and enjoy the baby days x
