). I want to phone a tack shop but not sure what to ask for without sounding a complete numpty, which of course I am...lol Can anyone explain to me in simple terms, what I need to say? Also do they attach direct to the saddle or do I have to buy something else to attach it too????

I have only ever heard of them called 'back or rear girths' and thats in english spansih and portugese....so dont feel like an idiot for calling up and asking for a back girth for a western saddle.
They should come in 3 parts, 2 straps that attach to the back loops on your saddle and the actual girth bit (quite short like a DR girth) which should have a strap&clip to attach it to the front girth.
These are 2 photos of the saddle i used on a QH stud showing all the bits.

and from the other side:

In the second photo you can see how it attaches to the saddle and front girth.

If you have never used one before:
BEWARE most horses buck ALOT the first time you put one on (it is similar to a bucking strap on a bronco). It is best to tack up and then lunge them / chase them up the arena a bit to get used to the new girth.
Also dont do it up tight like a second girth, you should be able to fit 4/5 fingers between the girth and the horse. They are only meant to act when you are roping by stopping the saddle tiping up when you have a cow roped and hanging off the horn...
This is just a photo of a hot horse and cowboy =)
You can just about see the gap between the horse and the back girth and he was roping that day
