Apologies if this has recently been discussed

Posting on behalf of a friend who wants more advice on Allen & Page's Calm & Condition, she has a 5 y/o tb which is sane most of the time, but over the last few weeks has become rather skittish and will be naughty in the school, sticking bucks in when least expected etc, she rides him through it all but he is denting her confidence a tadge.

Our YO has suggested putting him onto C & C and he''ll be having his 1st lot in tomorrow nights feed, now another person on the yard has said to her not to feed it as it will make him worse.

Recommendations/advice/how did you find it, if you fed it ?

Heard mixed results with the effect C+C has on horses. Its a fab feed, but high in protein, and some just cant cope with it!
I've just changed to Ride and Relax, after hearing brilliant reports on it, and ponio seems to like it, so fingers crossed!

Think it might have been me discussing that on the yard this evening??? I had horrific results with this feed with a mare I owned (Dee Dee) to the point that she had boiled up that much you couldn't get on her for rearing..... As with any top line/conditioning feeds, you need to put the work in with the horse for maximum benefits and I honestly think given this horses workload he should be on the ride and relax instead..... He has lovely condition at the moment and his owner has said she cant get his normal girth done up now - so why go onto a conditioning feed again????
Remember YO is working most of her's everyday..... and thats what really makes the difference with most conditioning feeds!

Ahhh so a conditioning feed is not needed. C&C actually has a fair bit of cereal in it, if this horse is not in hard work, then perhaps he would be better on a pure fibre diet with either a balancer or a vit/min supplement, make sure that the balancer is not on a cereal base and feed with either Graze-on or Ready Grass with Speedibeet, that way all the energy will be slow release and should not cause additional fizziness.

my 4yo is on c&C - ive just changed her over onto it. She is starting to increase her weight and looks really well on it. She certainly hasnt gone loopy on it.
I put her on it earlier this year and she wasnt fussed about it but now she absolutely loves it - but I didnt realise it was supposed to be soaked!!!

We didn't either! We wondered why one mare wasn't fussed on it, but when we bought it for another we realised it was meant to be soaked and he loves it! Oops

We put Bo on it last winter as he dropped a little condition but was also prone to the odd loopy attack

It did the job for him and he's been on it ever since

All allen and Page feeds require them being fed damp. They specify it like cereal in milk, feeding it damp makes the feed swell, so stops it from doing it in the stomach and causing tummy problems.

when i get to the yard i put 3/4 scoop into about 4-5 inches of water - leave it to soak till whilst i fetch in, wash legs off, pick feet out and change rugs - its soaked all the water up by then and is just a bit sloppy - then i add the rest of her feed to it.
so id say about 30 mins soaking time - it doesnt specify a soaking time but it just fits in with my routine.

I tried my lad on C+C but it blew his mind, far from calming him it had the opposite effect. I then changed to Relax & Ride & he took to that without any problem.

My Welsh Cob went stir crazy on it, she was like a greyhound half way through one winter so I fed her this and she went mental. Well she was pretty mental anyway... I prefer Bailey's Topline, but as we have established that the horse doesn't need any more condition I'd suggest staying clear of the C&C.

Calm and condition had no effect on my TB's weight, so i stopped feeding it. I also wasn't keen on the fact that it contained sugar beet.

I've been on balanced horse feeds show mix for months now- it is a true wonder product! It puts on weight and doesn't make them silly at all, as it's basicly fibre based.

I can't recomend it enough.
