I need calmer suggestions for my mare. I have tried NAF Magic, Stroppy Mare and NAF Oestress and to no avail. She is a 6 year old TB mare. At the moment all I am feding her is 1/4 a round scoop of oats and 1/2 round scoop of Alfa A origional once a day with pink powder. Yes I know people will say its the oats that are making her loopy, but this is the feed she has been the calmest on without oats she is still as spooky, but she is so lazy to ride and lunge its unreal. Any other mixes and things go to her head big style

She is getting worked 4-5 times a week.
I am thinking a stronger calmer is the only way to go, any reccomendations?

It may be the alfa, there is a type of protein in alfa that can send some horses a little loopy, try feeding something like Graze-on or Ultra Grass instead, has a similar feed quality and may be worth a little experimentation.
 
Would agree to try removing the alfa for a bit, my mare went from lovely calm mare from not having any alfa for a week, I didn't make the connection until I put her back on it and she is crazy again!! Don't know for sure, but worth a try

Thank you KatB, I will try those calmers. I am going to make a list of them and see which ones people think really work. The thing is, as I said, she was on happy hoof all summer and she was exactily the same as she is now. I will try taking her off the alfa a.. One day she can be so chilled its unreal, the next day we are napping, jumping into the arena and buggering off

Does she need to be on hard feed, ie does she struggle to keep weight on? If not then I think I'd take her off it altogether for a while. Could she just be a youngster trying it on a bit, as she isn't consistently difficult? Is there something pinching her maybe? My old mare was inconsistent like this and it was related to her seasons. I put her onto agnus castus (which is the active ingredient in most of the moody mare supplements, but if you feed it straight then the effect is better because you get a higher concentration) and it really helped to make her think straight. You can buy it from www.barefootbasics.co.uk (unfortunate name but good site for getting the basics from the expensive supplements).

Otherwise, I've had success with Topspec calmer and NAF Instant Magic.
 
I feed low molass sugarbeet, D & H Ride and Relax and Dengie HIFi with never ending supply of hay, Top Spec calmer and a mulitvit for my fizzy TB.
Wouldn't even contemplate feeding oats.
 
Thank you Chesnut Cob, she does need to be on hard feed otherwise she is so lazy she would be going backwards.. In the frost, I couldn't turn her out for 2 weeks and she behaved herself beautifully. Now she is back on her 4 day out routine she is a witch. Ever since I bought her as a 4 year old she has been, opinionated.. I have tried changing her feed, I have had her on no feed, I have turned her away, put her on suppliements, had differant saddles on her.. Its like owning Jekyll and Hyde.
 
I have just been recommended the magnesium calmer by Nupafeed. My cousin raves about it, she is in Ireland...., apprarantly they use it on the young racehorses... she lives on a stud over there, so maybe would work on your tb too!

My welsh Sec D sounds just like your horse lazy yet unpredictable. I have mine on placid, which seems to help loads. It helps take the edge off him in the stable aswell, he can be a pain to put a headcollar on or the bridle. He doesn't like having his ears touched. Have had him checked by vet & Physio/back person but they said he's fine. But since being on the placid I dont have to struggle getting the bridle on & he's alot better out hacking.

I guess it depends on the horse, my welsh D went loopy on Placid. After about 6 days on it, went to do my usual lesson with him and i've never seen him like it before. Could just be coincidence, but i took him off it straight away

Hi my TB mare sound exactly the same, pm me if you do find a good calmer, she was so lazy at one point I put her on a blood Liquid similar to red cell to hype her up a bit, now months on after taking her hunting i am struggling to chill her out, in the menage she is an angel but if a horse goes past she will try and chuck me off to get to the other horse.

I cant even get her to ride out up our lane without spining around or panicing at everything. totally unpredictable !!! slowly losing my confidence.

Im going to try her on the blue chip calmer and see how that goes.
 
Horse First - RelaxMe. I oen THE spokkiest mare, and dont get me wring - she is still not perfect, but is much improved on this - and she certainly wasnt on anything elsE!
