Hi,
I have a 9 year old, Irish Cob gelding that is quite stressy and anxious when not with people or other horses. He is on a very bland feed that doesn't have any sugar in it. Do you suggest a calmer for him and if so which one that doesn't break the bank?

Thanks in advance

If you search the boards you will find all manner of advice on calmers - but most of it boils down to trial and error. Some work for some horses some of the time. There is no quick fix.

Can you address the cause of the stressiness - what are you doing with him when you require him to be out of contact with other horses and people?

Anything with Valerian (like the one above...) is more likely to be effective but that is also why its a banned substance so you can't use it if you compete. Many also say the effectiveness wanes over time as the horse becomes accustomed to it.

He gets very stressed and worried when his field mates are going somewhere without him or if he is going some where without them. Even just to the arena.

When is it an issue as in when does he have to be without horses and people?

When he is in his stable and other horses are being ridden or going out places and he has to be left in his stable. Sometimes can get so worried and stressed that he tries to climb out of his stable door?

I have a 15yr old mare who’s never experienced life without people or other horses/animals around her. Previous owner always had other horses which she was herd mare of. I didnt realise the impact this truly has on a horse until i wanted to turn her out singly, followed by turning out another horse with her. She charged through fencing to follow me back to get the other horse. I was stunned.
Ive accepted it as im not sure at her age i can do anything about it.
She’s calm as a cucumber, fantastic personality until completely alone.
No herb or supplement would prevent her acting this way, if left alone, unless it was medical anesthetic!
Id be surprised if your horse would be calm on traditional calmers for this issue, unless he’s pretty ‘wired’ most of the time anyway?

We had one like this and a stable mirror helped no end.

I tried lots of calmers, most are magnesium based, if not deficient in magnesium they won't work. Only one I found that worked was Stepfree from Hack up, now called Liquid Caalm as you can alter the amount you give its really handy.

I've had really good results with global herbs supercalm. I couldn't tell you which active ingredient works but it definitely helps my nervous nelly and all his issues.

I have my mare on eCalm. It isn’t magnesium based. I found a positive reaction to life’s general stresses but not sure for full on panic (I don’t think any would survive that test because you would have a dope in a rope). I first put her on it as she was a bit anxious over field buddies being taken in and trailer loading. It has helped for that and done wonders to her coat.
