Anyone had any experience with using calmers? I am considering maybe trying on of my horses on one this winter so I would be interested to hear your experiences. Please fill out this:

Type of horse:
Reason for use:
Did it work?

If your grass/hay is deficient in magnesium, they should help (most calmers are magnesium oxide based).

A lot of grass is deficient, especially in Summer and Autumn. I understand they are reasonably safe to try, but if your horse's poo goes loose then it probably doesn't need any more.

yesss!! my tb and my sec D, section D flighty as anything used NAF Magic and worked brilliantly and my tb is a little tense at shows and i use Supreme Showing De-Fuse and he falls asleep at shows now!

Yes 110% difference. Was able to hack him whereas I couldn't get him off the yard before.

I never found one that worked on my old horse but have seen others respond really well to the NAF calmer.
Years ago a lady who was on livery on same yard as me worked as a nurse and decided to give her horse diazapam to clip  the same evening he had a bad bout of colic, vets were unsure if it was related but OMG what was she thinking :(

My horse, who was not un-calm in general but did quickly get upset when there was something to cause upset and took forever to calm down afterwards, is a lot more difficult to upset and much quicker to calm now that he is mineral balanced.

Magnesium balancers will only be any use if your forage/feed combo causes your horse to be deficient in magnesium.

This is really interesting, I am thinking of trying my new mare on a calmer as she is nappy to hack out and was wondering if one would help. As there are so many on the market its so hard to know which one to try!
Thankyou for asking it and i will be following with interest.

I spoke to my vet about this and she is very good (does a lot with queens horses and i wont have anyone else) as my mare was very marish and generally all over the place when at home and out esp in season and she said if she contniues being really bad then pig regumate but calmers dont work unless a magnesium defeciency. i would be wasting my money.
