Hi, my horse is soming back into work after 8 weeks and though was very good on our first hack was a little bit "enthusiastic"!! Would any of the claming supplements on the market, help to take tthe edge of? Any advice or opinions much appreciated. Also what is "valerian" apologies if spelt wrong as think I may have seen this mentioned somewhere? Ta muchly

have just put this on another post - I HIGHLY recommend equifeast
www.equifeast.com
Seriously can't recommend their products highly enough. Have recently used the calmer on a mad horse I ride who has transformed and jsut started Rocks today on the allergy essentials and respiratory support supplements.
They are also really helpful if you ring them up and explain your situation, they put together a regime for you and help you every step of the way x

Valerian is a calmer - however it is banned from use in competitions because of its sedative effect. There are still several calmers on the market with valerian in them, but again these cannot be used if you are competing. Wendals Herbs do two - Calmer and Special Calmer. The Special Calmer is very effective and is designed for Arabs and all horses. There are so many calmers on the market and no doubt several will be recommended to you - it is just a question of finding the right one that suits your horse. Equifeast is excellent, but rather expensive!

i was using magic for a few months and found it did bugger all to my mental tb so we are going to try blue chip Karma liquid apparently its great but we shall see.

By enthusiastic do you mean just a little fresh? if this is the case surely there is not much need for pumping extra things into your horse? and as you increase the work load the freshness should wear off? sorry but im a firm believer finding causes and rectifying them without supplements and drugs as such.

I would suggest steady up its herbal so supossedly natural it calmed my lad right down with just 1 scoop in his feed then gradually took him off it as he calmed down it really worked but dont give them more then a scoop in their feed as it makes them look like they are on drugs rather spaced out but works a treat if 1 scoop or less is given once a day

I have used both Dodson & Horrells Placid and Magnesioum. Both times when I've introduced them, I didn't tell anyone. Completely unprompted, people at the yard commented on how much better behaved and calmer he was. I now just use them for outings and they work a treat!
Both of the above don't seem to have sedative effects they just seem to make him be able to cope with life / new experiences a little better.

Archie is on Equifeast - tbh i dont think its doing much and ive cut it right down. Dont think il be buying anymore, unless he suddenly turns into psycho horse once hes off it!!

What i find does work for him is equine ameria so-kalm extra strength paste - before i put him on the equifeast i tried this, gave it to him a couple of hours before competing, and it worked really well. he was definately more relaxed.

I agree with Thaenalice, most horses are abit fresh when they first come back into work but it will soon wear off in a few days, I certainly wouldn't see it as a reason to put him on a calmer. Did you think he needed a calmer when he was in work before? If not then he won't need one now, his personality won't have changed with his time off, just give him a few days and I expect he'll be back to the horse you used to know.

Ive been using Blue Chip Karma for about 6 weeks now and can honestly say I saw a difference within 3 days.

It was recommended to me for muscle tension but has also helped ease the constant over entusiastic playing going on between my horse and the one in the grill box next door!

Thanks for all your comments, he is quite sharp when in normal work and though I do realise the freshness will wear off as it gets less exciting, I can only go on the roads at the moment and thought if something may help to take the edge off for the next few weeks then it could only help.
Am sure he will be fine and is prob only a placebo for his mum as we're not a supplement fiend but when you're handling your horse like he's made of china ( and yes I know he isn't but severe injuries make you paranoid) then anything helps. Ta muchly for all your advice.

placid, I put my mare onto the stated dose and after a few days I had to cut it down as she had become a right dobbin so that worked for my mare.

My vote goes for a magnesium based calmer - such as Magic or Equimins 'Serenity'. I use Magic as a maintenance, and then 'top up' with temprelax when a bit too much adrenaline starts to flow at shows......
We have had so much fun and sucess this year, instead of so much stress!
